7 Miles from Sydney, a 1000 miles from care

Advantages: great location, friendly people, chilled out, lots to do
Disadvantages: at some point you have to leave

...We were initially attracted to Manly simply because it wasn’t Bondi and whilst it is only about 2 miles from Bondi as the crow flies it takes well over an hour to drive there as they are on completely different sides of the “Heads” (the North & South Heads is the opening where the Harbour meets the Pacific Ocean). Bondi is where all the Brits and backpackers go (as it is the place everyone has heard of) and so we went to Manly because it is largely ... more

Surf Dudes With Attitude...Kinda Groovy

Advantages: Pristine beaches, lovely relaxed atmosphere
Disadvantages: Full of visitors for the above reasons

...Harbour brings you gliding into Manly Wharf, with views of the harbour beach and coves. Just north of the city, Manly is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and manages to pull off classy-beach-resort and tat-toting-tourist trap simultaneously. The Jetcat service is slightly quicker and slightly more expensive, but the standard ferry ride is so enjoyable it hardly seems worth it. You can also drive to Manly, though it's out of you ...
...the majority of people visit Manly for a day or half day trip from Sydney or further up the coast. -**- The Beaches and Beyond -**- The beaches in Manly are gorgeous, but too many tourists don't even find them, assuming the sandy stretch where the ferry comes in is all there is, and settling themselves there for the day. The main beach is in fact a 5 - 10 minute walk from the wharf, straight down the main street known as the Corso. This is reminiscent ...

Yet another East Coast gem!

Advantages: Beautiful location with lots to do.
Disadvantages: Can get quiet rough at night with young drinkers.

Manly is a beautiful suburb just outside of Sydney, and is well worth a visit. There is an abundance of places to stay, eat, drink or just hang out at. The beach, like many on Australia's east coast, is very inviting and even if you aren't up for swimming, it's nice to stroll along. The Manly ferry is a great way to get to Manly, although in rough weather it is sometimes cancelled. Manly also has a few small tourist attractions, such as the aquarium, ...
...quiet quickly as the drunks and riff raff come out of the woodworks. If you steer clear of late evenings, particularly weekends it's fine though. Overall though, Manly is a great spot for some fish and chips on the beach, or a cold beer at one of the many pubs. ...

Man what a restaurant!

Advantages: Stunning, excellent food, a real experience to dine there
Disadvantages: You need to get dressed up, service a tiny bit slow

I had the wonderful experience of dining at Man Ray back in June of 2005 while on a short break in Paris. My lovely other half saw the restaurant on TopTable website and booked it as a treat. The only slight downside was as I'd packed light for the weekend, and neither of us had been there before I wasnt as dressed up as I'd have liked to be for somewhere of this calibre. They have also now changed their name to Mandala Ray just in case you want to search for it on a search engine. Location The restaurant is located at 34 rue Marbeuf, which is about half way down the Champ Elysies just after the massive Louis Vitton shop. The nearest tube station is Franklin D Roosevelt. Opening Hours Mon - Sat 7pm - 12am Bar: 6pm - 2am Average Cost per head £35-£44/?57-?72 Payment Options All major cards accepted ...

Old Man of Hoy

Advantages: Beautiful scenery and an unusual natural sight
Disadvantages: Walking is necessary-although that isn't really a disadvantage at all!

The Old Man of Hoy is the tallest sea stack in Europe at 137m and an impressive natural site for those who are sick of all the archeological sites around the Orkney Isles. Originally a headland, the sea stack is created when the force of the sea washes swirls and causes pressure on the land between the stack and the mainland until it falls away leaving just its very edge as a stack. Early drawings show the stack with an arch extending from its base, which has since been swept away, from hence it gets its name since it looked like a bent old man. The island of Hoy is the second largest of the Orkney archipelago, just off the Orkney mainland and is said to have got its name from the old norse meaning high island as it is the only island in the chain to have any high land with the highest point being Ward Hill at 479m. Hoy can be reached ...

In search of the real Man

Advantages: Beautiful beaches, beautiful countryside, lovely people
Disadvantages: None at all.

Warning: This is a rather long review, so please make sure you have a drink and snack to keep you sustained whilst reading! A Jewel in the Irish Sea Is known as Ellan Vannin Although throughout the mists of time The place was called Mannannin Mann is yet another name Bestowed on Mona's Isle And some will call it Mannin If you listen for a while. I find it all confusing So please tell me if you can, Why all these names are needed, Why not just the Isle of Man? Dennis W Turner ***** In the beginning ***** A few years ago in the cinema, I fell in love with the countryside on the film of Waking Ned (Devine). The story was set in Ireland, but on buying the DVD some time later, I discovered that the film was not made in Ireland, but on the Isle of Man. This set me on a quest to visit the Isle of Man ...
