The Marco PoloHong Kong has a definite Wow factor, one of three Marco Polo hotels incorporated in Harbour City the largest shopping centre in Hong Kong. The hotel foyer is shared with the entrance to the Armani shop and all around is top level designer brand names.
Check In When we checked into the hotel we were told that our room was not ready for us. We were very politely asked if we would mind waiting in the lobby bar and given two complimentary drinks to compensate. Normally I am very easy going and patient and would not object to this but after a 20 hour journey to get to HK I was little disgruntled. The lobby lounge has a retro theme and is quite formal. After around 35 minutes no one had come to get us so my husband went to ask at the desk, apologies were made and we were finally able to go to our room.
Rooms The room was beautiful, large, very well decorated and spotlessly clean. We had a small kitchen/ pantry with
storage shelves, a safe, a fridge which contained cans of juice, alcoholic drinks, snacks and chocolate, a kettle with complimentary tea and coffee. Behind the door in the kitchenette was a hanging rail. Next to the kitchen was a bathroom with bath, shower, sink and toilet and a good selection of very good quality complimentary toiletries. The bedroom had two very large twin beds, a dressing table, television, lamps, two very comfortable armchairs, telephone and internet access.
Service The service overall was very formal, but very efficient. I did book a double room but we were given a twin, when I asked at the desk we were told that the room we had was all that was available that day, but if we wanted to move two days later they would have a double available then for us. We decided that we would be settled where we were by then so stayed in the twin room, but the staff did try to resolve the problem for us. My husband used the laundry service which was excellent. His clothes were delivered back to the room beautifully wrapped and in a basket the same day.
Price I booked the holiday as a package online through lastminute.com it cost £650 each which I thought was fantastic value. That included flights with Qatarairlines and 7 nights in the hotel on a room only basis. The prices in the hotel were quite expensive. After a night out and a few too many drinky poos we raided the cans of juice in our fridge, to discover the next morning on the price list that the four cans of pop had cost us £8 at £2 each. Lol the same can in the Seven Eleven around the corner was 30p. We stocked up on our own supplies for the rest of the week and turfed all their costly juice out of the fridge and filled it with our own.
Food There are loads of restaurants in the Hotel and shopping center.
Café Marco - Breakfast Every morning we had breakfast in Café Marco. An ultra modern, spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated café on the second floor. You enter the Café from the lift and are seated immediately. Waiting staff offer you tea or coffee. To say the buffet style breakfast is multinational is an understatement. In the corner to the left a chef prepares and cooks everything for the great British fry up along with a selection of German sausages. Next to this are the toast machines and then the Chinese breakfast selection with dim sum (filled dumplings). A large island in the centre has everything else, a huge range of pastries, bread, fruit and cereal. Breakfast is £12 per head and you can eat as much as you like.
The Spice Market The other restaurant we tried in the hotel was The Spice Market; it is actually in The Marco Polo Prince and is a bit of a walk from the Hong Kong, it is located at the other end of the shopping center along Canton Road. Staying at the Hong Kong allows you to use the facilities of the other Marco Polo hotels, you just show your room key to the staff, your meal is added to your bill and you pay when you check out. For £25 a head you are provided with a vast and multinational buffet. There are curries, soups, roasts, fish, lobster, vegetables, noodles, rice, fruit, ice cream and deserts. Just make sure you have an enormous appetite when you go as you will want to try everything. Don't be shy about stuffing yourself either. Everyone around us made at least four trips. It is very up market but has a relaxed and informal atmosphere. I really liked The Spice market.
Room Service We spent one relaxed evening in the hotel room and phoned room service. The food was excellent arrived very quickly, was fresh and hot. You are expected to tip at the door.
Location The Marco Polo Hong Kong is located on Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.
Turn right when you go out the front doors of the hotel and you are two minutes walk from the Star Ferry, the Cultural Centre and breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour. A few minutes walk along the front will take you to the harbour viewing deck a great vantage point to watch the nightly light show, and the avenue of stars.
If you turn left when you leave the hotel you will find all of the most famous designer stores, The Hard Rock Café and if you keep walking up Canton Road you will reach the large gold building of The China Ferry Terminal, from here you can book a day trip to Macau.
If you turn left then cross the road into Peking Road, go ahead a few blocks it will bring you out onto Nathan Road, the main road through Kowloon, which is lined with shops, cafes and food stalls. A good walk along here will take you to Kowloon Park, Temple Street market and the biggest plus away from the hawkers who will pester you relentlessly near the harbour. Nathan Road has all the high street names such as The Levi store, Benetton and Quicksilver. If you're a little less adventurous about the food, you'll find MacDonald's, The Spaghetti House and KFC there too. Kowloon Station is also along Nathan Road.
We had an amazing week in Hong Kong, The Marco Polo Hong Kong lived up to and beyond our expectations. The overall cost of the holiday was great value but the prices in the hotel were above average for the city. Despite this the extra cost was well worth it and I would definately recommend the Hotel and the city to anyone.
