... The 169th Oktoberfest drew several million thirsty visitors to the Bavarian capital, and while many of them may not have strayed far from the Teresienwiese where the festival is held, the crowded streets of the Old City were proof that scores of them did--at least temporarily--pry themselves ... Advantages: Beautiful architecture, interesting history, good shopping, nice cafes Disadvantages: Can be terribly crowded - especially on holiday weekends
...Beyond the Neues Rathaus, Marienplatz offers several other interesting things to see. The Old Town Hall, to your right if you're watching the glockenspiel, houses a toy museum (currently showing teddy bears from around the world). The main hall inside now hosts classical music concerts. The Mariensäule, or St. Mary's Column, in the center of Marienplatz, was erected in 1638 in gratitude for the preservation of Munich by the Swedes during their occupation ... ...music section. Other shops near Marienplatz include Gap, Esprit, H&M, a multitude of small boutiques, trendy retailers and a number of locations for shoes, accessories, jewelry and leather goods (you know you want a pair of Lederhosen, don't you!).
Hugendubel, a chain of bookshops throughout Munich, has a prime location on Marienplatz. The store's six levels of space includes a good English book section on the ground floor, and an extensive selection ...

Advantages: Beautiful City, Great Food, Wonderful Museums, Close to Alps Disadvantages: Too Many Tourists In The Summer
..., occasionally bringing out pretzels, or a lemonade, to ease our thirst, if not our boredom. It seems vaguely criminal now, and very possibly was, but we thought it quite thrilling at the time. We would watch a procession of ruddy-faced types in Tyrolian hats, and plump, blonde ladies in traditional dirndls disappear within the forbidding oak doors of its entrance, and ponder over the wonders we assumed lay within. When, a few years later, I was finally able to experience it for myself, it was with a great deal of disappointment. Actually, it was little more than a rather untidy composite of the tourist postcards I'd seen displayed on the Marienplatz... Yes, the waitresses really do carry umpteen massive Bier-Steins at once, but they do so in a depressingly desultory, rather joyless fashion, as though unwilling to draw attention to their prowess...

Advantages: Safety, Size, Greenery, Location Disadvantages: Language, Entertainment possibilities
...these 3 simple rules and you should have no problems:
1. Don't try to enter a club together if you are more than 2 guys.
2. Try, if you can to enter in couples, or with more girls than guys, but never more than 5 in a group.
3. You don't necessarily have to wear a shirt (guys) or a short skirt (girls) to get in. Mostly what you are wearing (jeans + trainers) will determine if you "fit" with the other clientele or not.
Having said that, there are some places that are more picky than others about what you wear e.g. Pacha or P1 (models only). The others e.g. Babylon don't really mind too much, but the policy about groups is upheld.
There are plenty of Irish + Auzzie bars for those who wish to mingle with English speakers. Ned Kelly's (situated ideally next to the Frauenkirche at Marienplatz) is one of the easiest Auzzie bars to find...

Advantages: Beer City, Friendly, Culture Immersion Disadvantages: expensive, diverse
...Munich, the largest and most prosperous city in Bavaria is also its capital. To those unfamiliar with Germany, this city had international acclaim in 1972 with the Olympics, unfortunately it also resulted in an international act of terrorism by palestinians on the Israeli athletes. Thankfully Munich has managed to foreshadow this embarrassment in the World-Class city it is today.
I advise the best place to start your infiltration into Munich is at the Marienplatz, the centre of action in the Alstadt(old city) and the gravitation point of the city. Here it is almost impossible to not immerse yourself in the culture and history of the city. Taking in the Neues Rathaus, gothic town hall, where festivals and events are held throughout the year. Oktoberfest, my reason for going and indulging in Bavaria's finest beers and girls...
