MARINA CARAVAN PARK

GLASSON DOCK

Marina Caravan Park is owned by South Lakeland Caravans.
It is situated on the banks of the Lancaster Canal to the rear and overlooking the River Lune at the front and is near to the little village of Glasson Dock on the outskirts of the lovely city of Lancaster.

The park is for static caravans only and has no touring site.
It has 135 holiday homes that are all privately owned and are not available for subletting.
The site is open from 1st March until 2nd January and is the perfect park for anyone interested in owning a holiday home.

If you haven't recently been inside a static caravan (or holiday home as they are now known) you can't imagine just how comfortable and practical they are.

There are new and used caravans for sale on Marina - the pre-owned caravans are both two or three bedrooms sleeping 4 - 8 people and are for sale from £11,995, whereas for the same specs new caravans start at £29,995.

The homes are warm - most have double-glazing and central heating and they are completely furnished - most new ones have a choice of washing machine or dishwasher, all have a fridge and most a freezer.

All new homes also include matching bedding. All you need to bring with you are you cooking and eating equipment and food and clothes.

A lot of the owners at Marina tend to spend nearly all the ten months in their holiday homes, which means that there is a lovely, friendly atmosphere on the site. Everyone soon gets to know each other and there is a lovely community feeling.

The facilities on the park are simple but very adequate - there is a pleasant reception area where the park managers are always available with any problems you may have; each home has its own private parking space (the vast majority alongside their caravans), there is also a general car park. There is a small laundry that has excellent brand new machines - for washing and drying; the small games/recreation room has a pool tablle and several game machines - very popular with the youngsters.

The park boasts a really lovely newly refurbished club with two plasma TV's, fires, very comfortable seating and a well stocked bar. This is a great place to get together with friends and neighbours on the site, there are regular acts performing at weekends and bank holidays and refreshments are provided free of charge or a 'Jacob's table' is held - where everyone takes a plate of food to make up a buffet table.

It is very common for people with birthdays, anniversaries - even a wedding - to host parties in the club and invite everyone on site to join them.

Next to the club is the newly covered heated swimming pool, until last year this was an outdoor pool but now the cover - which can be opened in good weather - means that the pool is available for use almost all year round.

It is surrounded by tables, umbrellas and chairs and has changing rooms, showers and toilets.
It is very pleasant to sit around the pool having a drink from the bar while the children splash in the pool.
The park is both child and pet friendly.
(Although dogs must be kept on leads)

There is a good social side to the park - owners can join a bowling and/or golfing club and play matches against locals. There are regular fundraising events through out the year, which are generally in aid of the children's Christmas party.

This party is sensational - every year Santa comes on site in a new and different way - horse and cart, tractor, trailor rides etc after the children and grandchildren of owners have had a great time eating, playing, dancing and being entertained by a professional entertainer. The children then go into Santa's grotto to receive an excellent present, selection box and bag of 'Magic Reindeer Food', they have their photo's taken with Santa and the photo's are then given to the families - all of this is free.

The owners take a lot of pride in their gardens and there are some beautiful displays around the site.

At the rear of the park is a private gate which leads directly onto the lovely Lancaster Canal - where you can fish, use a canoe, dingy, boat etc or simply walk into the village or into Galgate.
This is a popular dog walking stretch.

It is about a ten - fifteen minute walk along the tow path to the popular little village of Glasson Dock cwith a yacht marina and harbour. The walk - passing the local wildlife of swans, grebe, ducks and moor hens - takes you right into the heart of the village where you will find a smokehouse that sells superb local produce , two excellent pubs, a general store, a snack bar and a cafe that also sells home made pies to take away.

A optional walk is the coastal pathway with its magnificent sea views and tidal estuary that goes from the village all the way to Lancaster. There is a newly built cafe on this walk. This walk is the Lancaster Coastal Way and follows the old railway, it is perfect for cycling.

There are two more wonderful pubs that are also in walking distance.

So if you have ever thought about owning your own holiday home where you can get away from all the stresses of life, Marina Caravan Park is an excellent spot to choose.

Nearby attractions include Nearby beaches, galleries, museums, Lake District, Forest of Bowland, numerous restaurants/cafes, shops, bars, pubs & Clubs, horse riding and golf.

There is a two hourly bus service which stops at the park that runs from Knott End to Lancaster.

Apart from the initial cost of purchasing your caravan there are other costs to take into account:-

Ground rent - at the moment this is £2,300 per year, it covers all water, lighting, refuse collection etc.
Rates - payable to the local authority - this year this was £230
Electricity is my meter and - naturally- depends on how much you use you home.
As an example a family of three living for ten months on site with washing machine, freezers etc etc will pay around £500 per year whereas people using it for only weekends and holidays will pay less than £100.
Insurance and gas ( again dependant on use )- the gas can be bought from reception.

If you have a television licence at home you will not need one for your holiday home.

In Conclusion

As a VERY happy owner who spends most of the year here I would really recommend the park - it is small and friendly and you are always sure of a warm welcome.

One main attraction is that there are no touring caravans and the homes cannot be subletted so there are no strangers on the park - just friends.

Summary: we love it !!
