Advantages: Very friendly and great food! Disadvantages: I don't go often enough!
...just once from Sorrento, my advice is to go one way by road, and the other by boat, that way you get two different views of the coast line, and good views of the Island of Capri also.
BEACHES
Don't go to Sorrento for beaches, go somewhere else. Italy is a great country but generally, I personally don't like how they do beaches. There are some bathing platforms at the bottom of the cliffs in Sorrento, but the uniform lines of sun loungers is typical of what Italians do in many places. The platforms are privately owned, so you'll have to pay to use them.
If you want a nice beach not too far from Sorrento, seek out MarinaDiPuolo. Get on an orange bus to Capo DiSorrento which is up the hill past the Hotels Capo Di Monte and Hotel Bristol away from Naples. The bus stops at Capo DiSorrento and turns around, so get off and walk a bit further...

Advantages: Lots to see, reasonable prices, Disadvantages: noisy hotel on main street
.... Sunbathing is done on wooden jetties placed over the sea as there isn't much of a beach. Fishing boats line up along the sea edge. The marina has two ferry services to Capri one is fast hydrofoil the other going at a more sedate rate.

In here there is a profusion of small shops selling an abundance of goods; food, clothes, liquors, perfumes, leather goods, pottery, paintings, sculptures, woodcraft and jewelry In the main square you can have a pizza cooked in a wood fired oven, try Pizzera Aurora, coffee at the open...

...is filled with tourist shops, gelateria and some more up market designer stores.
Sorrento has two marinas. Marina Grande and Marina Piccola, conversely it is Piccola which is the larger of the two and is the departure point for the ferries that cross to Naples and the surrounding islands as well as the cruises along the Amalfi coast.
Maria Grande is the smaller of the two and is home to a number of fishing and pleasure vessels and is well worth a visit. It has a small beach area and some nice sea food restaurants.
Both marina can be reached by public transport or by walking however be warned Sorrento is a coastal town perched on the cliffs and while the walk down is pleasant the same cannot be said for the return journey.
Places of interest in Sorrento
For me the beauty of Sorrento was just to wander around the tight little streets checking...
