*** for some reason this review ended up in the Prague section... this market is actually in Essex, England ****
Went to the Barleylands Farmers Market on Saturday 25th July 2009.
Barleylands is a farm museum come childrens adventure farm with craft centre and holds a farmers market twice per month. It's also home of a regular boot sale and several other annual events. Their webpage is www.barleylands.co.uk.
I've been to a couple of farmers markets and by no means an I an expert, but I found this one a little disappointing.
Now farmers markets are what they say... markets held by/for farmers to sell their produce directly to the public. You also get thrown in for good measure producers of various other food stuffs including bread, pies and various other organic and home produced products.
All in all the location is extremely good. They have a large barn which sets the tone very well, but there are far to few stalls for the amount of people and the amount of products they could sell.
There are at least 2 bread stalls, several stalls selling pork products (how many sausages and types of bacon does one market need) and very few selling home-made pies (which is what I was looking for) and the pies on sale weren't that appetizing to tell you the truth.
There was only one stall selling free range eggs (something I thought would be abundant at a farmers market) and only a single stall selling more general meat products (other than the constant push of bacon into the baskets of shoppers)!
The prices were also extremely high and thats something I was shocked by. I know that farmers are there to make a profit, but the high prices may have been reflected in the fact that they didn't really have that much competition! The fact that there is only one stall selling vegetables (and only a small selection at that) was a great dissapointment. Here we are in the middle of Summer and there was just a scant selection of produce!
Now don't get me wrong, I would recommend that someone pops in and has a look around as I'm sure farmers market aficionados would agree that the location and setting of the market are extremely good, but the actual products on sale need to be of a wider variety.
The parking is excellent and you very rarely have far to walk with your purchases and it's not that far East London and West Essex to make it a real trek.
A nice trip out, but all in all I've been to far better farmers markets with a greater selection and far better value for money.... I'm all for supporting our farmers but I take exception at being ripped off.
Go along, have a look and hopefully have a nice day.

Review of Dolac Market, Zagreb
Advantages: Great variety of entertainment on offer. Generally cheaper prices than larger venues Disadvantages: The length of the trek to the loos! Not the most comfortable seating

Review of The Old Market, Hove
Advantages: Nowhere else on earth has more multiculturalism packed into one place Disadvantages: These days it's little more than a tourist attraction.
