My husband and I stayed in the Marriott hotel in Petra for one night in March 2005. It's situated up the hill but as long as you hire a taxi to get you there it's not a problem, moreover, you get nice views.

The hotel is quite small but has most things a guest would expect in a five-star hotel. They have two restaurants, a bar, sauna, steam-room, outdoor pool.

Our check-in was easy, they found our booking and gave us the keys. I have to point out that the reception staff were extremely helpful and friendly throughout our entire stay.

The room wasn't overlooking anything spectacular - it was facing a road. The good thing was we didn't hear any traffic noise. Our room was quite well furnished - two double beds, a bedside table, dressing table, TV, two arm-chairs, wardrobes. The bathroom was clean too, with usual toiletries supply and a hairdryer. The sink was blocked though, which happens at every other hotel I stay in.

After we unpacked our bags we headed straight for the sauna and steam-room. There are two of each - for men and women - but as we were the only people there the attendants allowed us to share the same sauna and steam-room. Each is for limited to 15 minutes and isn't complimentary. Using a sauna, steam-room and a cup of tea afterwards will cost you 7 dinars per person and normally sessions have to be booked in advance.

I am afraid I can't report on their evening buffet as we preferred to eat at their Italian restaurant instead. The meal and service were OK, the food didn't taste typical Italian though.

Breakfast in the morning was hectic. Too many guests and two few staff. The menu wasn't too varied either - they didn't have any sausages, you could have pancakes though!

I was told there are 300 hotels in Petra, and I would definitely recommend this one.
