The Marriott in York is located on Tadcaster Road and is on the very edge of the Knavesmire Racecourse, so during the racing season it gets very very busy. It has 151 rooms, since having a large extension built to accomodate extra vistors for Ascot last year. Room prices vary, but we paid £139 per room for one night, this included breakfast. There is some parking at the front of the hotel but plenty at the back.

It is also set in lovely gardens, has 2 tennis courts, and beauty salon (fantastic massages!) and a leisure club with swimming pool and gym. We took full advantage of the swimming pool and the beauty salon. You pay for your treatments here, swimming and the gym is free to guests.
The reception ara was clean and welcoming, and there is a terrace thing at the back, a bar and restaurant downstairs. The staff were very courteous, and we had a lovely young man help us to our room with our bags!
The bar is pricey, but no more so than any other hotel bar, but the decor is a bit sort of dark, which is at odds with the rest of the foyer area which is painted lovely and bright.
The rooms in the extension are superb. I would recommend asking to book a room in the extension if possible. The 3 rooms we had backed on to the Knavesmire, and had there own terraces complete with wooden patio furniture. The view across the Knavesmire was beautiful. The rooms themselves were very spacious, we had twin beds in ours and they were immaculately clean. The bathroom was too big for two, it was very big, and we actually had 2 showers in there, one over the bath, and one separate shower stall. So luxurious!!!! They had a really nice range of toiletries too, they were all aromatherapy ones, and smelt beautiful. (Also ladies, please note, in the public loo in the reception they have Molton Brown handwash and hand cream!!!) Both the room and the bathroom were spotless.
Breakfast was buffett style, with cereals, toast, full englsh ingredients, jams, tea coffe, juices etc. Our plates were cleared away quick;y and the dining room was very modern and smart. It also has a full dinner menu, but some of the combinations were... hmm... a little odd. Gammon with gravy anyone?
If you can afford to stay here often I would, without a doubt! Also, they are very good for special occasions like Hen do's etc. The staff were helpful and friendly, and although it was slightly chaotic with it being race week, were quick to check us in and help us check out. 10/10.
Advantages: Comfortable hotel with great view of racecourse Disadvantages: Journey into York Centre
...it is part of the Marriott empire, it is really easy to book on line, monitor the current rates, and change if necessary. I find this a big advantage. No pint in me quoting prices as they vary constantly, but note that this hotel gets particularly expensive in th esummer, and of course during race meetings! I stayed there most recently in January 2006, and upgraded to a grandstand view room which had a large balcony with table and chairs overlooking ... ...out, and would be even better in the summer. The hotel seems to be well managed overall, and everything appears clean and smart. There is an extensive buffet choice at breakfast, and we found the evening meal in the restaurant to be excellent. THis was included in our DB&B package.
Travelling into York is a bit of a nuisance, but there are a few permutations. The distance is only a couple of miles, so you can walk if you are keen. You can drive, ...

It is a 20 minute stroll into the city centre but a cab ride on return is not too expensive.

I spent an overnight weekend stay at this hotel earlier this year for my hen night. There was a group of 9 of us and we managed to get triple rooms (2 double beds) and the reception staff were helpful as I changed my booking twice due to numbers in my party. The hotel is greatly located a short taxi ride from city centre, costing about 7 pounds. The facilities were excellent and spending most of the afternoon in the spa it was a fairly cost effective ...

Advantages: Good things to see, places to eat and drink Disadvantages: ???????
I actually live in York, but thought I would write a review for those planning on visiting, because to be honest, there are a lot of places guide books say to go which are a total waste of time.
I wouldn.t plan on going to York for any longer than a week because there isn't a great deal to do.
There are some really nice guest houses and hotels. The marriott and The Royal York are very nice - not too cheap though. There are also some really nice guest houses near the football ground.
Places to eat- 'Ask' Pizza near Macdonalds in the city centre is a fantastic Italian, the meals are really reasonably priced considering the place is so posh looking! I have been hear about 3 times and have never had or known anyone else to have a bad meal. The only downfall is that the drinks are expensive.
The Exhibition on the corner of gillygate ...
