I have stayed in this hotel a number of times, including in its previous guise as a Swallow hotel. Now that it is part of the Marriott empire, it is really easy to book on line, monitor the current rates, and change if necessary. I find this a big advantage. No pint in me quoting prices as they vary constantly, but note that this hotel gets particularly expensive in th esummer, and of course during race meetings! I stayed there most recently in January 2006, and upgraded to a grandstand view room which had a large balcony with table and chairs overlooking the racecourse. This was a very pleasant spot to sit out, and would be even better in the summer. The hotel seems to be well managed overall, and everything appears clean and smart. There is an extensive buffet choice at breakfast, and we found the evening meal in the restaurant to be excellent. THis was included in our DB&B package. Travelling into York is a bit of a nuisance, but there are a few permutations. The distance is only a couple of miles, so you can walk if you are keen. You can drive, but parking in the centre of York is tricky. There is a bus stop outside the hotel with frequent buses into the city. Otherwise, as we do, you can turn left outside the hotel and walk or drive the 600 yards or so to the park and ride, from where you can get a very reasonably priced return ticket wich drops you right outside Cliffords Tower in the city centre, which is ideal.
