Even though I live in York, a friend who moved away booked several rooms for us over the last race meeting for her Hen Party, so I had a fantastic time living it up here!
The Marriott in York is located on Tadcaster Road and is on the very edge of the Knavesmire Racecourse, so during the racing season it gets very very busy. It has 151 rooms, since having a large extension built to accomodate extra vistors for Ascot last year. Room prices vary, but we paid £139 per room for one night, this included breakfast. There is some parking at the front of the hotel but plenty at the back.
It is also set in lovely gardens, has 2 tenniscourts, and beauty salon (fantastic massages!) and a leisure club with swimming pool and gym. We took full advantage of the swimming pool and the beauty salon. You pay for your treatments here, swimming and the gym is free to guests.
The reception ara was clean and welcoming, and there is a terrace thing at the back, a bar and restaurant downstairs. The staff were very courteous, and we had a lovely young man help us to our room with our bags!
The bar is pricey, but no more so than any other hotel bar, but the decor is a bit sort of dark, which is at odds with the rest of the foyer area which is painted lovely and bright.
The rooms in the extension are superb. I would recommend asking to book a room in the extension if possible. The 3 rooms we had backed on to the Knavesmire, and had there own terraces complete with wooden patio furniture. The view across the Knavesmire was beautiful. The rooms themselves were very spacious, we had twin beds in ours and they were immaculately clean. The bathroom was too big for two, it was very big, and we actually had 2 showers in there, one over the bath, and one separate shower stall. So luxurious!!!! They had a really nice range of toiletries too, they were all aromatherapy ones, and smelt beautiful. (Also ladies, please note, in the public loo in the reception they have Molton Brown handwash and hand cream!!!) Both the room and the bathroom were spotless.
Breakfast was buffett style, with cereals, toast, full englsh ingredients, jams, tea coffe, juices etc. Our plates were cleared away quick;y and the dining room was very modern and smart. It also has a full dinner menu, but some of the combinations were... hmm... a little odd. Gammon with gravy anyone?
If you can afford to stay here often I would, without a doubt! Also, they are very good for special occasions like Hen do's etc. The staff were helpful and friendly, and although it was slightly chaotic with it being race week, were quick to check us in and help us check out. 10/10.
