Advantages: Lovely location, tasty food, good prices Disadvantages: It's in America and I'm not
of this highway and as we hadn't been very hungry when we left San Diego we were getting quite peckish and ready for something substantial to fill our bellies.

This pretty marina is an excellent place to wander around and have a look at the boats that dock there. It was named after a sailor who visited this area and subsequently wrote a book that tells of his adventures trading and sailing in the 19th Century.
There are plenty of small shops and large restaurants to choose from around DanaPoint, as well as museums to visit to find out more about the history of the area. This headland is the first point before getting to Laguna and then Newport Beach areas and the scenery is spectacular.
If you are looking for something a bit special to do whilst in this area then whale and dolphin watching trips are available ...

of the hotels are built along the corniche, facing the sea but on the wrong side of the road - and there is no beach anyway. Until recently, the only hotel with access to any beach to speak of was expensive, glitzy Ritz Carlton. However, The newest hotel, the Novotel Al Dana, has tried to get in on the act, built in traditional Arabesque style, with access to a beach, albeit a lagoon.
ARRIVAL
When we arrived it was already dark. The airport pick up that we had booked went to plan, there was a chap with a sign with my name on (Mr V. Boy... no, not really) and he led us to the car park where a minivan rolled up a minute later. Our bags, cases, pushchair, baby, all got thrown in the back and off we went. But with the baby in our arms! Within minutes we were driving over the bridge to the main island that forms Bahrain and, less than ten minutes ...
I stayed at the Marriott Royal County recently.The hotel is very easy to find. Local shops are only a five minute walk away as are local pubs and restaurants. This hotel also makes a good choice. One problem you might find is trying to find a parking space. This is an ideal location from which to explore Durham. There is an indoor heated pool. The service in the hotel was first class.
