The Way You Were (The Kingdom by the Sea - Paul Theroux)

Advantages: well written, individual perspective, very of its own time
Disadvantages: biased & dated

Paul Theroux undertook his journey round the coast of the United Kingdom over 25 years ago, in 1982. Even more than normally, his book is very slight on information, strong on description and dominated by the author's perceptions, feelings and judgements. Being his usual miserable persona, Theroux doesn't spare the locations he visits and the people he meets just because they happen to be British. Wry, observant and always seeing the empty half of the glass (unless it's filled with sludge), he travels the length of the coast of the UK by train and on foot, avowedly skipping castles and cathedrals and under-sampling cities. He is, of course, frightfully unfair. He's scathing, ironic, judgemental without spelling the judgements out, and very, very choosy about the human creations too. As all who read Theroux know, he's not very fond ...

Review of The Kingdom by the Sea - Paul Theroux

I'll take the castle with the sea view! Blown away by Culzean...

Advantages: Just a spectacular place
Disadvantages: Costly

Following some idyllic weather days at the end of May we went in search of a day trip that would offer us some time in the sunshine. Having lived in Scotland for several years we are really only just starting to branch out and see some of the amazing places that it has to offer. Following a Google search we came across Culzean Castle and Country Park. The photos of the location and the buildings were sufficient enough to whet the appetite and justify the midday hour and 15 minute long drive from Glasgow. A designated National Trust site handed over by the Kennedy family in 1945 and declared as Scotland's first country park in 1969 it boasts an array of attractions and plenty of open space. The drive from Glasgow was really pleasant with fantastic views out to the coast from very early on in our journey. Traffic was reasonably heavy ...

Review of Culzean Castle, Ayrshire

Up on a mountain, down by the sea

Advantages: Fascinating history, incredible location
Disadvantages: Small, not in great repair

. History The Castle was originally built in the 1230s by the Welsh, but was taken over and remodelled in the 1280s by the English, only to be burnt by the Welsh two centuries later, which was to be the last major rebellion by the Welsh against the English. The location is perfect for guarding both attacks from land and sea. What there is to see There was originally an inner and outer wall to the castle, although the outer wall is now largely raised to the ground. It is still possible to see where it would have been though. The inner wall is in much better condition, although it is much smaller than Harlech Castle. There are two towers either side of the gatehouse, which presumably would have housed a portcullis type gateway at one point. There would have been at least two stories, although it requires a fair bit of imagination to work that out ...
