We've just come back from 1 week at Brayka Bay Reef Resort (Marsa Alum).
Superb hotel - Barring no outdoor swimming pool for at least 1 month (ongoing repairs I believe).
Superb if your into diving/snorkling - if no interest go elsewhere there is very little else to do.

Advantages: Fantastic for diving/snorkling Disadvantages: Very few other attractions
...do.
Marsa Alum town consists of one main street with a few souvenier shops - beware shop owners trying to charge excessive amounts for items to purchase - barter with them or walk away.
That also goes for the hotel complex - one persistant guy trying to sell you massage treatment who wont take no for an answer. There have been many complaints about him & I really don't see him holding down the job for much longer. ...it will save a few headaches.
We didn't & therefore had to pay an entry visa $15 each & arrange our own transfers.
Be aware also that there were no taxis outside the airport so we had to blag a lift with a tour bus & pay €30 for the journey to the hotel. It's near impossible to arrange transfers from the UK so if you are in this situation I suggest contacting the hotel & arrange for a taxi to meet you.

Note also the hotel has no facility to obtain cash. For this you need to arrange a taxi & head to another hotel with a cash machine. Again give yourself plenty of time - taxis are scarce & it took us 1 hour before we managed to do this.
This & the pool are the only real downsides.
99% of the staff are great.
The hotel caters for mainly Italian guests, very few English at this stage - why is it the English are the only nationality that can stay till the end of the nightly disco?
Advantages: Weather, diving, underdeveloped - get away from the crowds Disadvantages: Not if you want nightlife, or don't snorkel/dive
We went to Marsa Alam direct from Gatwick (unfortunately with Excel - read my other review!), which was a half hour transfer from where we were staying. The weather was a hot 33 degrees celsius, cooling down to needing sleeves in the evenings, and underwater was between 26-28 degrees.
We stayed at an all inclusive, basic diving resort, with a beautiful reef right in front of our doorstop. It cost £650, which included flights, transfers, accommodation, ... ...for 5 days.
The surrounding area is vastly under-developed so there were no shops / restaurants / discos / pubs and it was ABSOLUTE heaven to get away from it all. You could go on Bedouin desert trips or quad biking for something different to do, but it's all sand-related!
Our accomodation was the middle option - own room and shared toilet/shower facilities. Everything was kept immaculate, and I didn't get a dodgy stomach once, which is unheard ...

Marsa Alam is a 4 hour ride from Hurghada but, don't worry, the new airport opens in November - at least this is what the locals say! Quite who will use the airport is uncertain as there are only 2 or 3 hotels in the area.Shams Alam looks great in the foyer and the rooms are quite good, however, the food is almost inedible so prepare to lose weight. The dive centre is really good and boays set off daily at 8.30 returning at 5 pm. There are dolphins ...

Advantages: nice views by the sea, and diving experts Disadvantages: nightlife is poor
I was in Egypt last year in march, I stayed in the hotel in marsaalam, I was on holiday on my own, and i really love Egypt, I thought the area was very nice, the hotel i stayed in was ran by German people, and there was losts of german people i stayed with, and they were very nice, i went into the red sea, the red sea is a very beautiful part of the world under the sea. My hotel was basically in the middle of the desert. about 50miles away from the nearest town each way. overall i thought it was very good staying there but the night life need to be improved more, to attrach more people to the hotel, because i was there half board and the entertainment was very little. ...
Advantages: Was on time, fly to Marsa Alam Disadvantages: Awful awful awful food, some cabin crew members
We booked our holiday in MarsaAlam in Egypt, taking advantage of the direct flight from Gatwick airport. Boarding took a while, with people backed up all the way through the tunnel and out into the waiting lounge. When on board, there was no where to put our hand baggage except under the seat in front. This would have been fine were it not for the metal post that was in the middle of where my legs should have fitted. The seat pitch (space between the seats) was sufficiently small that I, at 5'5" couldn't fully adopt the brace position, but I guess all this is now normally accepted on airline flights.
We took off on time, and were promptly offered light snacks by the cabin crew, costing about £1. When I asked when the meal would be served (in an attempt to not spend my last few quid on crisps!) I was told that it would be ...

El Quseir is unspoilt by tourism and there are some fascinating old buildings in the town. The people are really friendly and welcome tourists. It is the REAL Egypt but will change fairly rapidly as tourism expands. Although there is a new airport at MarsaAlam, 25 miles from El Quseir, no planes fly there from UK - just Italy and Germany so far.
I really recommend this area for families or anyone else - it is peaceful and serene but the underwater sights are spectacular. ...
