Marseilles has a dry heat with tree's full of noisy Crickets, chirp loudly when it gets to a certain heat. They rub their wings together, & sound like shakers. My friend lives in an apartment near the sea front just up the road from a large fountain. The front doors look like two double doors fixed together in the middle. Her flat has a lift that is good to push heavy bags into, cramped for people. The stairs are spirally with a light which works on a timer, I was left in the dark twice!

Theres a market everyday held in the street below, and the people are very friendly. You can buy anything from hair grips, handbags, beach towels, suncream, footwear, sunshades and swimwear. I found it pretty hard to get a one piece swim suit, as they only do bikinis. The changing rooms on the market consist of a blanket hanging round a frame, or hanging off a tree; I had to get my cousin to hold it up at one point.

Shopping in town is very nice, althrough some things can be expensive. There's a shop which has Garfield items for sale like clocks, slippers, towels etc. There's lots of cafe places in town. There’s a very nice café on the harbour which has chairs and tables outside facing a merry go round, which has horses on. When the wind gets up the tables can suddenly take off like Apollo 12. The menu is good with lots of pastries and hot meals (can’t remember their names). You can get drinks like Pineapple, orange and Cranbury, Coke is also available.

It’s so hot that we have to run the fans all the time, at night it is tolerable. During the day the heating go up to the 30’s about 7.30am!

Basilica of Notra Dame de la Garde

The Basilica of Notra Dame de la Garde is good to visit. It is an airy church right on a hill overlooking Marseilles with stunning views of the city. The statue on top is covered in real gold leaf, which can be seen from my friend’s balcony. To get here you catch a tourist train from the harbour. It goes up some pretty steep hills, I wonder if the engine is strong enough to get up some of them at times. And down at a speed to make you gasp. From the church you can see two islands, and the ferry that goes to Corsica. Hardest thing about it all was going home to chilly blighty.
