Marseille is the second largest city in France, the region where Marseille is the capital of its region 'Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ' and is well used for shipments etc.
Around August months the temperature is easily 30 degrees C. It shares a mediteranian climate of hot, humid and dry, the coldest months are January and february (11 degrees C)

Marseille is of great importance to france, - look at the french national anthem - la marseille.

During my visit to Marseille as much as i wanted to just stay and relax at the pool and soak up the lovely climate i did go out. Marseille is famous for its Opera Houses, museums and galleries. - May sound boring, but there were some good locations we went to.
If your into shopping then The Centre Bourse is the main shopping centre of Marseille and contains both the History Museum as well as a series of open archaeological ruins now used as a park.
An extensive bus network serves the city and suburbs of Marseille. However when I went we hired out a car (from the airport) lol erm this is the best way around - if your a good driver because the french are very 'busy' drivers sometimes and we did get knocked from behind! But if your a good confident driver willing to drive on the right hand side of the road a car is great because you can explore at your own leisure. - I recommend you learn some french makes the locals like you more - The locals and all french people i met were extremely friendly - we'd always ask for places like la supermarche (supermarkets) and people would actually guide us all the way there sometimes.
If you like culture holidays you'd love the kind of things you can visit. You should take a brochure with you so you can pick the places of interest - we went to the city of Orange (accent on the e) which has amazing orange dunes we walked through - looks like the grand canyon (i think this is where we saw most of the stuff like a large Roman theatre overlooking the sea (with english audio guide headphones) - (BEAUTIFUL PICTURE MOMENTS) In Orange we also took a pic with the arc de triumph.
Food there is excellent, like we have hot dog stands - icecream vans, there they have pizza vans - and i must say the pizzas were absolutely delicious and very different to what we are used to here (much thinner/crispier). In marseille they love their fish dishes, which are pretty good.
Its important to note that marseille has a natural culture. That is why you wont really find packaged holidays to marseille, (a bit touristy) you would mostly arrange your own visits there, but its still a great experience in my opinion.
A nice hotel with swimming pool may cost just under 100 pounds a night.
There are places just outside Marseille worth visiting, the shakespeare thing for example and a place i went to called Toulon (largest opera house after paris)
During my journeys around France you find alot of lavender fields, - purple flowers which give a great smell, the roads can be quiet depending on which areas you visit.
In marseille itself there are lots of ports and harbours you will see with boats and stuff.
Overall the atmosphere of Marseille - created by the french language, the locals, the serenity and most of all the climate make marseille a great relaxing destination filled with culture.
Ive got some amazzzinnggg pictures and my home video of the holiday. I might upload some pictures to my website or to Ciao at a later date. You can contact me for pictures through my site www.mopages.co.nr
Overall I would strongly recommend a trip to Marseille - unless your into night-clubbing etc - though i heard marseille has them i never saw them. Marseille would be loved by slightly older people - though when i went i was very young - (enjoyed the swimming pool and climate the most). Best place to visit is the roman theatre in Orange. I now love the french people and the french language.
(i put nightlife as good because i remember there was this great night time market - beautiful scene and beautiful prices)
(I am currently scanning holiday pics i took, damn i should be a photographer!)
Advantages: small, friendly, good facilities Disadvantages: none
Flying from Gatwick to Marseille (Mariagne) with BA for the first time alone, I was rather nervous about what the airport at Marseille would be like. My daughter was working in France and was meeting me at Marseille airport but would not be in time to meet the flight, so I would have a short wait.
I am one of those people with not much of a sense of direction and can have my confidence easily chipped away by anything unfamiliar, but as it turned ... ...coffee with croissants while the Marseille sunshine filtered through the windows. There was a relaxed atmosphere, people were walking about with luggage trolleys, and backpackers passing through
As in most airports there is a waiting area in front of a large window looking out into the runway where people can watch the the planes taking off, children had their noses smearily pressed up against the window.
My daughter arrived and took me outside ...

Advantages: Cheaper than England, great food, easy to get to, friendly people Disadvantages: High crime rate, polluted (aren't all big cities??!?) Its French (Lol)
how do I get there?
Well despite Marseille being right at the bottom of France it is still remarkably easy to get to and you do not have to rely on the plane. Firstly the obvious way to get there is by plane - British Airways, Air France and Buzz (only from Stanstead) fly there.
Now if you're not too keen on the travelling by plane you can go entirely by train to Marseille. (When I went to Marseille I went by plane so I don't know how much this option will cost but I imagine a fair bit more than an airfare). To get to Marseille by train you need to get to Waterloo Station (in London) and catch the Eurostar to Paris. And then from Paris catch the TGV to Marseille. I'm not sure what the exact journey time would be if you went to Marseille that way but I think the Eurostar takes a 2 or 3 hours and the TGV from Paris to Marseille ...
Advantages: An interesting Vieux Port (old port) area, good accommodation options nearby Disadvantages: A noticeably high crime rate, not a great deal to see outside the port and coast areas
A “reputation for roguishness and danger”, as an older edition of our guidebook states, at first seemed a rather strange claim to make about Marseille. Regrettably, however, crime rates here are among the highest in France, and our own impressions could do nothing but strengthen this view.
I had first visited the city two years ago, in the summer of 1999. That time, I had stayed in a pleasant (though rather unhygienic) youth hostel far from the Vieux Port area, and had avoided any kind of mishap whatsoever. This was still true after a confused two-hour walk back to my accommodation (after the Metro had unexpectedly shut down on Sunday evening), which took me through dark alleyways of the worst description. In fact, it was only other people that ever appeared to hold a grudge against Marseille’s inhabitants ...

Advantages: It's a Beautiful city with breathtaking views Disadvantages: Going out for a drink can proove expensive.
Marseille is a beautiful city, with some of the most breathtaking views, and historic landmarks. Food is cheaper to buy there. Particularly fresh vegetables. There are plenty of shops and supermakets, and a large street market in Avenue du Prado, near the Castillane. When it comes to restaurants, you are spoiled for choice. But being a vegetarian, I went to a vegetarian restaurant called Country Life, in Rue Venture.
I went on 16th September. However I have visited the city many times before. Being relatively close to home, and thanks to the channel tunnel, it is great to travel there by train. Given the speed and comfort of the Eurostar and TGV, I think it is preferable compared with flying.
Unfortunately, drinks are expensive, even mineral water, if you buy them in a restaurant or a bar. Typical price for a small bottle ...
