Martin Place is easy to get to by bus or train and is in walking distance of everywhere in central Sydney. However there is not really anything to do. Its more of a business area than anything else.It is useful to know that most of the international embassy's are located here, just in case you get into trouble.
The area is rammed during morning and evening 'rush hour' and full of suits all barging each other out of the way to get to and from the train station. There are few bars and restaurants in the area and those that are there are all busy at lunch time and after work, but become dead at all other times of the day and weekends.
It is a good place to work though, because you are near all the shops to do some retail therapy in your lunch break if you need to and it has the best food court in Sydney. The food court is quite big and has such a range of hot and cold food. Some of it is expensive but there are shops to suit all budgets. Again, it gets busy at lunch time, but there are benches outside to sit on - but only really in summer.
The main focus of the area is business. There are public banks and a post office. There are few cafes and restaurants and these tend to be on the expensive side as they are catering to the business market. There are not really any shops, but as I said before they are only a short walk away. There is one theatre, but it is quite small and I have not personally been there.
The area is quite nice in general. There is a lot of nice architecture and its clean and well maintained, but its not really a place of great interest. However if you are looking for work you will be in good company here and several recruitment agencies are located here.
