Advantages Looks great from the outside, good location
Disadvantages dissapointing room and facilities
The city of Groningen is quite a big city but it has a nice and quiet small centre, with everything within walking distance. You can find this hotel at around 5 to 10 minutes walking from the main centre. The hotel is located on the street called Gedempte Zuiderdiep which is between the main train station and the city centre. There are a number of buses that run along and it is about 10 minutes walking from the main station.
The martini hotel is a two star hotel and it is located in a 19th century old building. Downstairs you can find the bar and the reception and it looks like the hotel is quiet popular with the international travellers. The hotel looks good from the outside and has a appealing look which made me excited to go in. I saw a note saying that from October 2011 they will also have a restaurant. We had a standard room for two person but they also have rooms available for 3 or 4 people. Since we arrived here with public transport we didn’t had to worry about parking. If you come here with car you will need to park at one of the public car parks or use the limited parking space from the hotel itself for 10 euros per night.
Downstairs is the reception of this hotel. It is a 24 hours reception which is very good. It always gives me a feeling of safety but in addition it is very easy when you come back late at night. At the reception were two people and we were kindly helped by a woman. My details were known and they only needed my credit card. After everything was settled I got the room key and we got the explanation about where the room was located and the breakfast. We were wished a happy stay and wish you could always come back with questions.Always the most important of the hotel. We had booked a double standard room. When you walk into the room on your right you have the bathroom and on the left you can put your suitcase down and you have the wardrobe. Walk through then you have to the right the bed with two bedside tables with both a lamp. The room felt a bit small and compared to the beautiful outside, it looked very plain and even a bit run down. The bed was ok but the bathroom looked liked it could use a update. Very basis and not something we had expected..
We stayed here three days from start to finish, we kindly helped by the staff. Now I must say that we had no problems and questions. But I certainly had the feeling that they would help and we were always greeted warmly when we came back. The hotel isn’t that cheap and you pay more for the location then for comfort. We paid around 150 euros for two nights. I expected a bit better especially the comfort of the room and the facilities. The staff is very friendly and we did sleep well but its not a hotel room were you want to spend the whole night. Three stars for me.
