I'm Henry the 8th I am!

Advantages: Historical, unique, lots of information
Disadvantages: Price

...the opportunity of visiting the Mary Rose, which I hadn't been to see for about 15 years.

A SHORT HISTORY

Sorry, I know that my History bits can go on a bit - I'll try to keep it short and sweet! The Mary Rose was one of Henry VIII's warships. Contrary to what most people (including me - oh dear!) think, it did not sink on its maiden voyage, but was actually around for over 30 years before the disaster. The ship was ...
...for war with France, the Mary Rose set sail from Portsmouth Harbour. There are many theories as to why she sank but the most common is that her gun ports weren't closed. The sailors on board (probably between 500-700) died.

The ship sank into layers of silt and half of it became quickly covered in the silt. The half that remained exposed rotted away, but the half that was covered remained intact, allowing for the ship to be raised ... more

King Henry VIII's Hidden Treasures

Advantages: You learn about the real people of Tudor times, not just Royalty!
Disadvantages: Expensive maybe, location might be considered too out of the way.

My mother asked me about a month ago, if I'd be interested in seeing this exhibition with her. It's been advertised locally quite a lot, being as it's in our vicinity and the exhibition has only just opened, and she was interested in seeing it. It didn't really appeal to me, mainly because I found my school history lessons had been dry and uninspiring. Added to which, the Mary Rose had been Henry VIII's flagship, and with my sketchy knowledge, a more remorseless and egotistical monarch is hard to find. (Unless you count his daughter Elizabeth who thought it best to burn all those Catholics. And his first daughter, of course, nicknamed Bloody Mary). Anyway, time passed and we both forgot about it, until I had some time booked off work recently, and asked my mum if she'd still be interested in going to see it. She was, so we looked up ...

Review of Hidden Treasures from the Mary Rose, London

Haven for Waterbirds and People

Advantages: Lovely Park. Beautifully Maintained. Good Facilities
Disadvantages: Does get busy

station to the park is Baker Street and plenty of buses ply the route from the West End. There is actually a lot to see and do in this gorgeous, verdant, expanse. You can walk, jog, run, take your dog for a walk, eat your sandwiches, have an afternoon picnic, have a cup of cappucinno in one of the cafes and restaurants, gaze at the flowers, listen to music at the bandstand, feed the ducks and admire all the other waterbirds on the pond. You can also watch outdoor performances,go boating, hire a cycle, play soccer, and take your kids to the children's playground. The Queen Mary Rose Garden attracts a lot of visitors who ooh and ah as they gaze at all the wonderful flowers. There is the Heron Island and its no wonder that bird watchers just love Regents Park. You can rent a boat or a bicycle and whether it is active or passive recreation you ...

Review of Regent´s Park (London)

Londons finest

Advantages: Beautiful park, well maintained, numerous facilities.
Disadvantages: Cafes slightly expensive, films etc very expensive

I had to organise an event at Regents Park recently which meant many, many planning visits!! I must now be qualified as a Park guide! The standards throughout the park are excellent, from the lawns and wonderful floral displays to the many cafes, all well maintained by friendly, helpful staff. Its a great day our for all the family with lots to occupy you. Feeding the ducks and the very cheeky tame squirrels provides hours of entertainment, there are numerous places to eat, boating lakes, music in the bandstand, the open air theatre, children's playgrounds, the heron island and of course the beautiful flowers - there are often special events advertised throughout the park or details from the main park office in the Inner Circle. We were lucky enough to be in the Queen Marys Rose gardens which as it sounds has the most ...
