Masada is a fascinating place, where the Jewish zealots committed suicide, rather than accept the Roman’s rule. I chose to take the cable car up, although this made it a rather expensive option at 50 shekels (nearly a tenner). You can walk up, but it takes 45 minutes and in the blazing sun, I wouldn’t recommend it – no way! If you do decide to walk up, go in the early morning. A taxi took us from Ein Gedi for the price of the bus fare. There are fairly good explanations of all the different buildings and what they are, and drinking water is provided at the top. All in all, a pretty good day out.

Advantages: Hours of exploration if you like archaeology and Jewish history, good views over the Dead Sea Disadvantages: A cynic will view it as a pile of rubble on a hill
