Masada is such a fascinating place to visit, especially if you are interested in archaeology or Jewish/Roman history. The history behind Masada is quite interesting. There is much anti – Semitism now, and it was active back in the Roman times. The Jewish people were always causing problems with revolts against the Romans, so the Romans had decided to try and get rid of the Jewish nation. In consequence of this many Jewish Zealots made a fortress at Masada to protect themselves. Anyway, by the time the Romans had managed to build themselves a ramp up the side of Masada all they found were a few women and a couple of children left as the rest of the Jews had committed suicide instead of giving in to the Romans. When the Romans saw that no one was left they were completely shocked at the response by the Jews. However, this is a great place to visit. If you are ambitious you can climb which takes about 35mins if you are fit! The best time to go if you are climbing is to go on the sunrise tour from the Petra Hostel inside the Jaffa Gate, Jerusalem, leaving at around 3 in the morning, you climb up Masada and then see the sunrise over the Dead Sea – which is an amazing site and I speak from personal experience! You then go on to see the Dead Sea, En Gedi Nature Reserve and Jericho for about 90 NIS.
