Advantages: Historical heritage, beautiful landscape and a proper place to relax Disadvantages: Doesn't offer a lot for "clubbers" or young people seeking excitment.
...As a native Austrian living in the UK i am very pleased that i can write my first ever review about a town i know well!
Mauthausen - your first impression will be a very pleasant one. It's a town full of friendly people, situated in the (upper)heart of Austria.
Go for walks to admire the beautiful countryside, indulge into the delicious austrian cuisine, or cycle along the blue river - it's a town to chill out and refresh body and soul.
We must not forget Mauthausen's dark past. Let's think back to the year 1938. At that time the Nazis established a concentration camp in which sadly 150.000 people lost their lives. The camp was one of the most infamous in the entire Nazi alternate universe of human destruction.
I have visited the camp myself a good few years ago. Although i was still very young, didn't know a lot about...

...Continuing the reviews of my recent trip to Washington, this review is about the Korean War Memorial. I think that if you go to Washington and only see one memorial (there are a lot!) then this should be the one that you see…..and here's why.
SOME HISTORY
The Korean War lasted from 1950-1953. It is not a war that gets talked about a lot, mainly because everyone concentrates on the Second World War which had only been over for five years and the Vietnam War. The War broke out when the Communist regime of North Korea invaded South Korea. The USA was afraid of the spread of Communism and so decided to fight to defend South Korea. Over 54,000 American troops were killed in the three year war (and a lot more UN troops as well).
The Memorial itself was originally planned in 1986 but as with everything the realisation took...

Advantages: Sensitive and incredibly informative memorial, in a beautiful setting. Disadvantages: There are a limited number of tours each day so you may have to wait for more than an hour.
...The USS Arizona, a US battleship (BB-39), had an adventurous life, but it is perhaps its death, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, which had the greater impact on history. As the scenes and pictures of this ship exploding, with 1,177 of its crew still aboard, was a major catalyst for the entry of the USA into the Second World War.
I think everyone's response to and feelings during and after their visit to the USS Arizona Memorial will be quite different. I for one was extremely touched at how sensitively they have honoured the many lives lost.
The first part of the tour is a wonderful documentary which in half an hours provides an informative historical account, setting the scene leading up to the attack and the mistakes that were made (such as mis-interpreting the radar which in fact picked up the Japanese...

The book starts with a lady called Catherine living in a convent off the coast of Greece having been washed up on the shores to be rescued by the nuns living there.
She's lost her memory and is gradually trying to put together all the pieces of what more
I decided to purchase this book as a change from reading biographies and I am very impressed with the enitre book. I did not go out with any particular book in mind and not quite sure what it was that attracted me to this one, maybe that it has a sticker more
