It’s a bright sunny day would you like to come with my family and me to Mead open farm/? Mead farm is an open farm at Stanbridge, Leighton Buzzard, and Bedfordshire. www.meadopenfarm.freeserve.co.uk.
This farm is a farm with traditional farm animals it is about ½ hr from my home so get in the car we are going to meet my daughter and grandson there. We have arrived and parked our car. We enter into the ticket office it cost us £4.50 for an adult £5.0 for a child if we had senior citizens that would cost £4.00 if we wanted to buy an annual ticket it would cost £26 for adult £22 for a child £24 for the old one. I f I lived in Leighton Buzzard I might be interested in that.
We walked past the shop selling toy animals, books and trinkets standard type of things you get in zoo’s / farm’s.
There was a tearoom too we did not use it as we were only going to be there a couple of hours. I noted they did birthday parties here £9.95 per child one adult free per 2 children, extra adults £3.50 each for this you get entrance ticket party invitation. Bag of animal food, party bag for kiddie’s bubbles crayons colouring book helium balloon, dairy ice cream, party food (not sure what this would be so If I was thinking to do this I would enquire) drinks, complimentary cup of tea for adults. Tractor and trailer ride A birthday cake is available should you wish, personally I would prefer to take my own. This facility is available for over 8 children. I think it sounds better than a MacDonald’s party.
So now we walked out into the open air and the farm. The first place we headed to was the pet barn where there were rabbits and gueaneapigs to cuddle and stroke, there were also some chickens, in fact chickens were wandering all over the farm. Adrian was only a little nervous of the animals. We did take Adrian’s buggy and found when we needed to use it, it was not difficult there was usually somewhere I could push it without to much trouble. I think a wheelchair would be able to navigate the terrain .I always watch out for these things as I push a wheelchair at work. After we had stroked and petted the small animals we walked outside we found sheep to look at and pigs. We then went into a soft play area Adrian was a little small for it. There were soft mats and a soft chiming frame are a ball pool. I think it would be suitable for my disabled pupils and for children aged about 3 and upward.
We went on walking round the farm there were some baby animals in one area. At certain times you can bottle-feed a lamb or groom a pony. We could have collected eggs from the hens. Adrian was only a year and a bit old so he was a little young for some of these activities maybe we will go this summer and I think he will benefit from the visit more
.We walked along paths past fields of sheep, horses, cows. Adrian loved it when the animals came up to the fence to be stroked we watched to make sure he did not hit instead of stroke as young children tend to do. We watched to make sure his fingers did not get nipped. It was not a large area to walk around. We walked back to the central farm area pointing out and naming animals (yes ever the educater) showed Adrian the animals legs stroked their soft fur looked at their noses pointed out their waggy tails watched the ducks swimming on the pool. We saw some baby animals. (Lots of foundation key stages and key stage 1 opportunities here) When we got back to the centre of the farm there was a small outdoor play area with a few climbing frames there was also a sand pit a few swings and a little tikes play house Adrian found a girl friend he followed around not being able to speak much they just smiled at each other here we sat and watched him play for a little while.
Then we went back to the petting area to stroke a rabbit again then we left to go home after about 1 ½ -2 hrs.
We could have had a tractor and trailer ride around the farm The farm is open all year apart from Christmas time from November to Jan it is open 10am till 4 pm and 10am till 5 pm the rest of the year.
There are special events as you would expect Santa visits in December and there are falconry displays during the year. There are reptile-handling sessions too. The web site is quite good and has details of events and dates. We had a good time I expect I shall take Adrian again one day.

I enjoyed it when I went as a helper on a school trip some years ago, I had almost forgotten about it, maybe my youngest Grandson age 4 would like it here...... Heatherx
