I moved to Kimberworth near Rotherham 3 years ago now. I live within a mile of Meadowhall Shopping Centre. I can see the familiar big glass dome of Oasis (the food hall) from where I live. I remember when I first saw it, I asked my boyfriend what it was as I first spotted it at night all lit up like a christmas tree.
Me: 'Hey whats that dome thingy over towards Sheffield?' Him: 'Oh thats the Murderhell Dome' (his affectionate name for the place) Me: 'Meadowhall? That close?' Him: *Silent* Me: 'Oh wow can we go tommorow?' Him: *Silent*
That is the start of my 3 year love affair with Meadowhall Shopping Centre. My Fiancee knows when I go there I won't be half an hour, I just cannot walk past all those shops in half an hour! Ridiculous to suggest. No I like to take my time and browse. He used to take me every Saturday. But I noticed a pattern developing> We would spend a few hours in Meadowhall....come home......and it would be ' I'm too tired to go out tonight, knackered from shopping ' So it didnt take me long to realise leave the other half at home then I get the best of both worlds!
☼ Directions:
Meadowhall Shopping Complex is based on the outskirts of Sheffield, right next to the Rotherham boundaries. It is situated within a minute off of Junction 34 off the M1. First left on the roundabout. You can't miss it that is where all the cars are going. If you do miss it you will find yourself going under the Tinsley Viaduct,(which back tracks under the M1) a sure sign you've gone wrong. A bit of a pain as you have to go through 4 sets of traffic lights to get back round.
On entering Meadowhall car parks don't automatically go for the first one you see. There are loads of car parks to choose from with over 12,000 parking spaces you should be alright! The Centre is surrounded by a ring road which sweeps around with stacks of entrances to car parks at various points access into meadowhall itself. The car parks are all colour coded and numbered. But please pay attention. Its no good saying ok so we're parked near
Allders. It is all too easy to forget and wonder why your Bentley isn't outside Debenhams where you could have sworn you left it! I rarely use the car parks as its easier for me by public transport. But I believe they are free.
☼ Shomobility:
There is a shopmobility scheme running also. With various scooters and wheelchairs for hire. I have tried to find out further information as to which car park this is run from with no joy but the phone number for the Mobility Scheme is here :
Next to Meadowhall is the Meadowhall Interchange. This is the main Bus / Train / Tram Station serving Meadowhall exclusively. This is an excellent service provided by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). The services run in quick succesion with trams running every 10 minutes and trains every 5 minutes, the buses its hard to tell as they run from all over the country. But the website tells me theres over 120 buses per hour run out from the centre. Of course you get the enevitable delays but with a complex as large as this we can't expect miracles. It is said that " Meadowhall is within a 60 minute drive-time of a staggering 8.2million people - that's equivalent to 1 in 8 of the population of Great Britain." It is linked to the Shopping Centre by a fly over type glass corridor. Its not too far to walk but boy will it feel like it when you come back!
☼ Meadowhall Shopping Centre:
As soon as you get to the end of the 'wind tunnel' there is an escalator down or you can go straight into Marks and Spencer clothing department. I recommend going down (lol) as there is a large selection of cash point machines at the foot of the escalator. Meadowhall is based on 2 floors. Big wow I hear you say thats not big. Its the scale of the floors that makes Meadowhall so massive. A little bit of history now taken from the website. "Until 24 February 1984, the land on which Meadowhall stands was occupied by a steelworks owned by Hadfields Ltd. When the steelworks closed, the land lay derelict until construction on Meadowhall began. Before work could commence, 100,000 m³ of contaminated waste had to be removed from the site. Construction began in June 1988 and took 27 months to complete. 2,500 construction jobs were created with approximately 75% recruited locally."
The complex is built in the design of streets these being;
High Street The Arcade Park Lane Market Street The Oasis The Lanes
The design is supposed to be a Classical Palace layout, but other than the main dome over Oasis I cant say I can see whats palatial about it. Maybe from the outside it could look Palatial.
.
There is over 270 shops within Meadowhall. ☼ The website:
http://www.meadowhall.co.uk
☼ Address of Meadowhall:
Meadowhall Centre Ltd Management Suite 1 The Oasis Meadowhall Centre Sheffield S9 1EP England
Tel: (0114) 256 8800 Fax: (0114) 256 8666
The website can give you more information on the individual shops. There are 10 major stores to be found here they are:
Marks & Spencer (2 Levels) House of Fraser (2 Levels) Debenhams (2 Levels) Sainsbury's (1 Level) Boots (2 Levels) WH Smith (1 Level) NEXT (2 Levels) Bhs (2 Levels) H&M (2 Levels) Allders (1 Level)
My personal favourites are Allders, H&M and Debenhams. There is such a variety of goods and the stores offer varying price ranges to suit most budgets. A real tip I would offer is to go when the sales are on. There is usually a sale on at all times in Meadowhall as there is so much competition, but the January sales area must for any bargain hunter.
☼ The Lanes:
For a present that is a bit different I recommend you try The Lanes. It is situated near Oasis the food hall more or less in the centre of Meadowhall. The Lanes is one of my favourite Meadowhall haunts. The shops on the Lanes are generally different from the unconventianal to the convential. There are 29 units on the lanes. Mostly shops but there are toilets / phones / baby changing facilities also to be found here. The Creche is situated in the top corner. The collosal variety of shops is staggering, you name it they have got it here. There are specialist shops for example; A watch hospital, Lots of designer fashion outlets which specialise in everything from Classic designs to Gothic or Hippy type clothing. Some of the shops to be found on the lanes are Arkwrights Emporium a reproduction antiques specialist. Candle Time, full of candles and aromotherapy oils and seasonal gifts. Cleopatra stocks ethnic clothing and an extensive range of jewellery. There is Corgi collectors unit full of die cast models and steiff teddy bears. The Formula One shop is one we can never pass when I'm there with my boys. There is a hobby hut, a Funky Monkey gift shop, also Olivers childrenswear, this is a must for special occasions. These are to name but a few
☼ Oasis:
There are 30 places to eat in Oasis shopping hall and various other cafe's and resturants dotted all round Meadowhall. Everything from MacDonalds to Bradwells English Resturant. Something for all tastes in these places, there is everything from Harry RamsdensFish and Chips, MacDonalds, Burger King, KFC to a Specialist Curry Shop Mamma Amalfi's. You can sample tastes from around the world, whilst watching the giant 48 screen vidiwall. This usually has Meadowhall promotions, Cinema latest blockbuster trailers or music video's.
☼ Promotions:
There is always something on at Meadowhall be it a book signing or a childrens entertainer or a fashion show, you'd be hard to find a weekend when there isnt something going on. In this week alone here is a list of things going on at Meadowhall:
Friday 10 September Ford Vehicle Promotion Mecca Entertainment Road Show Visa Promotion
Saturday 11 September HSBC Golf Tour Ford Vehicle Promotion Visa Promotion New Look Glamour Event
Sunday 12 September HSBC Golf Tour
☼ Most Exciting Purchase from Meadowhall:
That would have to be my Wedding Dress from Debenhams! Was in a sale and two thirds cheaper than it should have been......Bargain!
☼ Most Boring Purchase from Meadowhall:
Well My weekly shopping from Sainsbury's has to fall under this category, having said that the shop itself is great.... massive but great!
☼ Facilities:
There is a Creche ran at the Centre. With fully qualified staff this service is aimed at 2-7 year olds. This Creche prides itself on its security measures. You have to collect a leaflet from any of the main Customer services desks and fill out an registration form. This service however must be booked and there is a limit of a maximum of 3 hours for under 3 year olds. The charges are from £1.60 for half an hour up to £6.25 for 2 and a half hours. But nevertheless a handy service.
There is play area for kids as well but they must be supervised to play in here.
There are a few help desks dotted about and toilets (always useful!)
There are also lockers situated near to the bus / train station and at the entrance near to M&S. These are very handy if you have no more arms left for lugging shopping around but arent ready to go home just yet. Thses are available at £1.00 returnable deposit.
There is a scheme where you can buy Gift Cheques from the Help desks. Available in two denominations £5.00 and £10.00. These can be paid for in cash or by Credit / Debit cards. They can also be ordered over the phone on the customer Careline 0845 600 6800.
☼ Go Shop Incentive Scheme:
There is also a shopping incentive scheme where by you can save money by printing off the vouchers at kiosks dotted around the centre. There are lots of freebies associated with this daily such as facials manicures etc. There are help desks situated all over the complex for advice. The website says; ' You can view all your exclusive offers below and then print off the offer coupons at home or when you come down to Meadowhall, look for the 'GO SHOP' kiosks on the malls where you can access special offers and print off coupons - saving you ££'s on your shopping trip.'
☼ Cinema:
The Cinema at Meadowhall is a huge success and is always seemingly busy. It is an 11 screen Warner Village Cinema with lots of screenings at various times of the day for more information visit:
http://www.warnervillage.co.uk or alternatively the Meadowhall website http://www.meadowhall.co.uk
There is always queues outside the cinema so it may be an idea to book online first. The cinema is situated in the centre near to the Oasis. Which is the huge central Eating area.

I hope you find this review of some use to you. Its well worth a visit. But my tip would be avoid weekends or rainy days as it seems the world and his wife all have the same idea on those days. I'm sure theres lots I've missed so please shout up if theres anything more you need to know and I will add it

** Don`t forget that a lot of parking is undercover and that there is free breakdown cover if you can`t start your car upon your return, overburdened with all those bags of shopping! This information was kindly provided by Paul (Bwanamdevu)

personally i am not a large fan of meadowhall, living in leeds (also like lil_lisa86) i have the funs of the whiterose center however this may not be large, it is just big enough, i find MH too large and easily confusing, and there is too man ladies shops the mens shops there are really expensive (£70 for a t-shirt i saw in there :O) but all in all, great review!
