...The Sheffield Cholera Monument stands at 21 metres high and rises like Sheffield's very own version of Cleopatras Needle, on a hillside overlooking the main Bus Station and Railway Station. I remember visiting this place when I was at School and I see it everyday on my journey to and from work, yet I rarely give it a second thought. That is until the other night when, on my way home from work, whilst waiting to cross the road, a group of foreign Students stopped me and said: "Excuse me, do you know what that big monument is, over there?" I looked up at the Cholera monument, which dominates the skyline and realised just how much I sometimes take my home City for granted. ...If you like the tranquillity of Japanese gardens, the Japanese Zen Garden, situated in the village of St. Mawgan, nr Newqay is the place to visit. Having been a Zen practitioner for the past 25 years, I found this garden exudes a peace and tranquillity that usually takes an hour of zazen (Zen meditation aimed at stilling the mind, transcending the "chattering mind", and becoming at-one with the self) to produce. The layout of plants, rocks and various interesting water features interspersed tastefully with statuettes of Buddha and traditional Japanese pagodas, really helps the visitor to just "be" in the present moment leaving behind the stresses and strains of everyday life. The Zen garden itself, a "sea" of stone chippings that flow around larger rocks, is particularly attractive to those of us who like to focus their mind... Read review

...creating a highly decorative paved area in the centre of the Gardens with a series of Fountains in the middle shooting jets of Water over 12 feet into the air. These Fountains were named the Goodwin Fountains and they contain 89 individual jets. They were named after the late Sir Stuart Goodwin who was the founder of one of Sheffield's most important Steel Firms called Neepsend Ltd. Adjacent to the Goodwin Fountains are the Holberry Cascades. These magnificent Cascades take their name from Samuel Holberry, who was a leader of the Sheffield Chartist Movement. He was imprisoned for his part in the Sheffield Rising of 1840 and died in York Jail in 1841. The Peace Gardens also contain three important Monuments.
