Advantages: good range of foods, not sold out as much as Fayed's hell hole Disadvantages: not really the place to shop on a tight budget
Until the Meinl Group was taken over by Corso Spar, in 2000, the word Meinl was synonymous with Coffee and quality food, with Meinl being the supermarket for the more refined shopper, who didn’t have to watch the Schilling and Groschen (now the Euro and cents!). The flagship store, located on the Graben, right in the city centre, remains and the store is the Viennese equivalent of say Fortnum & Mason or the Foodhall at Harvey Nicholls. Of course ... ...vulgarity, Harrods.
Getting to Meinl am Graben is a synch. On foot it is about 200 metres from the Stephansdom / Haashaus, and the U1 and U3 underground lines stop here. Alternatively the 1A and 3A bus routes stop very close to the Peterkirche (about 100m away). Taxis aso stop within about 50 metres of the front door.
This is now the only Meinl left, with all the others rebranded as Spar’s, although Meinl am Graben is in keeping with the feel of ...

Advantages: The best grocery store in Vienna Disadvantages: A bit expensive
The best grocery store in Vienna, in the Internet www.meinl.at. Very good wine department (incl. wines from all regions of Austria, France, Germany, Italy, USA and Australia). Fresh bread, poultry and fish as well. All sorts of marmalades, sweets. Typical viennese atmosphere.
