One Of The World's Great Zoos...

Advantages: Spacious, Attractive, Wonderful Variety Of Animals
Disadvantages: Few & Far Between...

...Royal Park, sits the Royal Melbourne Zoo. This is a wonderful setting for a Zoo, and the neighbouring Royal Park is truly beautiful, but beautiful in a very Australian sense. There are no rose gardens here, nor topiaries, and certainly no green and manicured lawns. Nor are there any picnic tables, or extravagant plants with botanical names displayed on discrete little plaques at their rooted feet. Instead, this park consists of a sequence of endless, ...
...the early years of the Melbourne Zoo, its unfortunate inhabitants were housed in superannuated circus cages, or extemporised huts. An article published in the Edinburgh review in 1855 was highly critical of these conditions. "Why do we coop these noble animals in such nutshells of cages?" Its author asked, "What a miserable sight to see them pace backwards and forwards in their box-like dens! Why should they, of all the beasts of the forest, be condemned ...

Melbourne's Crown and Glory

Advantages: Lots to do
Disadvantages: Hard to see it all

...on the town. Crown Casino is the jewel in Melbourne’s crown (excuse the pun) of night life. Standing resplendent on the south bank of the Yarra River in the heart of the city, the casino, built in 1996 is a must see. The 39 storey, six star hotel and casino complex has something to offer every visitor, young or old and almost every pocket from fast food and a movie to gourmet cuisine and a night at the gaming tables. Last week was my second visit ...
...This last visit to Crown was a different proposition altogether to the last. The first thing I noticed this time out was how magnificent the place looked all lit up in the dark. The neon flashed and sparkled and there are turrets of flame around the building, blazing against the night sky. We’d had a pretty full on day and we were looking to blow off some steam in the form of drinking and behaving badly as one does on an out of town work trip on ...

An actual visit to Ramsay Street

Advantages: The Street
Disadvantages: Tour was a bit naff

...without a visit to the Neighbours set. As you can tell from my previous review on Neighbours the show, this is one of my favourite shows from childhood and I grew up watching it and was actually very excited at the prospect of going to visit the street when I went backpacking in Australia a few years ago. The fictional Ramsay Street is set in the fictional town of Erinsborough. In real life the show is filmed in a place called Pinoak Court which ...
...the ones that say official Neighbours tour. If you are backpacking around Australia though all of the hostels you stay at will have information on the tour and you can often book your tickets through them. When I did the tour back in 2005 I think the tour bus actually did pick ups from a number of the hostels too because obviously it’s generally young people that are staying in the hostels and it’s young people who want to go on the tour. Looking ...

A Prancing Horse, A Scot, A Fin and a Columbian

Advantages: Exciting
Disadvantages: Melbourne is too far away

...celebrate the start of the Formula One Motor Racing season, beginning in Melbourne Australia. The date – 9th March 2003. The circuit is Albert Park, Melbourne; a circuit which is partly a road circuit, as well as having the setting of the park itself. The back drop is Melbourne’s CBD and St Kilda Road area. The Grand Prix Australia has been at the Melbourne circuit for several years now, and is also the date that most F1 fans wait for, from the ...
...and last year in particular, Formula 1 has been slated for being boring, predictable, fixed, lacking in excitement, dominated by Ferrari, etc. So over the winter months, the executives have been reconsidering some of the rules that govern the sport. Viewers of the sport were drifting away and Bernie Ecclestone’s digital TV channel was not very successful either, although £12 to watch a badly commented race could have been the reason for that. Now ...

More than GREAT Ocean Road!

Advantages: Sights and scenery
Disadvantages: None that I can think of

...**GO WEST** Go West is a touring company which specialises in small group size tours. It is a day tour from Melbourne which will take you to the Great Ocean Road. This tour company has something which I have never seen done before and that is they provide you with a PSP on the way home so you can watch a movie (they have several choices). They even have an educational video about the Great Ocean Road. If you want this service you will have to produce ...
...I was just rearing to go out and see things and not be stuck in a building reading about things, I'm very impatient lol! You could bypass the centre if you wanted and take a short walk to see the 12 Apostles. Now there isn't 12 anymore only 8 left because of erosion. It was extremely windy down there and it was slightly crowded. It was hard to get a photograph with just yourself and the background in it. It was lovely to hear the sea hitting against ...
