Crown the King of Kitsch
Advantages: Impeccable Five Star Hotel Disadvantages: It's In A Casino!
...strikingly when plans for the Crown Towers Complex were first tabled over a decade ago. To say the proposal was controversial is to put it mildly. A massive area, occupying almost the entire south bank of the Yarra River in the city centre, was to be given over to a Casino, Hotel and Entertainment Complex; a gargantuan monument to excess, extravagance and bad-taste. It was to be a $1 billion development, featuring a 1000-room hotel, a massive virtual-reality ... ...was disfigured - for life. Crown Towers was loud, it was brash, and at night, it was smothered in a pernicious rash of sparkly lights. It was the absolute embodiment of over-the-top ostentation. In short, it was the sort of thing you'd expect to see in Sydney. Yet here it was, in the very heart of Melbourne. When Crown finally opened, amid much fanfare, in 1996, the masses swarmed and the fuddy-duddies tut-tutted and swore to stay away. Some have ...

A night at the Ibis
Advantages: Service was great Disadvantages: Room a bit small
...into our room at the Ibis but we were hoping they'd keep our luggage safe for is so we could get off to the track. When we arrived we explained what our plan was for the day and the receptionist was very helpful and accommodating, giving us a couple of options for luggage storage and checking us in so that we would have no hassle when we returned that evening. We went off and had a great day, not having to worry about if our room would be kept for ... ...I remember staying in an Ibis in Manchester once where they said they only did double beds. Anyway, no such problems on this occasion.
The beds were firm and clean and I wasted no time in collapsing on mine as I'd been standing up all day and was knackered. The room had all the things we needed, tea and coffee, a fridge with some milk in, a hairdryer and an iron. There was some shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom and two small bars of soap. ...

NYPD Blue set reject
Advantages: Central Disadvantages: dirty, intimidatery, noisy
The hotel is situated in the Melbourne Swanston area on one of the main shopping avenues. It was advertised in the "Aussie Backpacker" magazine, so I assumed it would be suitable for a weekend stay in the city as part of a backpacking trip around Australia. What a mistake! We had unfortunately just handed over our payment when I noticed a "No refunds on accomodation" sign. When we went upstairs the hotel looked like a set from the NYPD Blue Tv show. ... ...of the local drunks and prostitutes. One of their selling points was a 24hr bar, the music from which could be heard throughout the hotel until 5am. The toilets were worse than the "worse toilet in the World" scene from "Trainspotting", and was the only place in Australia I saw a cockroach. When we checked out, the bar boucers blocked the doorway until the barman had signalled that we had paid. A nightmare weekend. The centre of Melbourne only has ...

Urban Central, Melbourne.....simple but good
Advantages: High hygiene standards Disadvantages: The decor is a bit characterless.
Location: fairly good. It is within walking distance of the CBD (central business district), but there are more centrally located hostels in Melbourne
Staff: there was one staff member that served me that didn't seem so friendly, but the rest of them seemed to be ok
Rooms: fairly simplistic...white sheets, white walls etc. Felt a bit like a hospital ward at times, it was very spartan, but also very clean. All rooms have lockers for the same number ... ...very handy for leaving your phone/ ipod on charge if you need to leave the room, and are worried about 'tea leaves'.
Facilities: the toilets, like the rest of the hostel, are clean but very spartan. Free breakfast is provided, although this only consists of cereal and toast. Tour desk in the reception area, manned during the day.
Security: swipe card system for entering rooms, bathrooms and the main entrance after hours.
Value for money: this ...

Elizabeth Hostel, Melbourne...weirdos aplenty.
Advantages: Location, price Disadvantages: Weirdos
Elizabeth Hostel, 490 Elizabeth Street *The Good* - location. Walking distance of the CBD. About 3 mins walk to Melbourne Central. Lots of Asian restaurants around. About 1 min walk to Victoria Market. Tram stop pretty much on the doorstep. - the staff are mostly Chinese, so this would be a definite pluspoint for Chinese-speakers. - quieter than most hostels at night. - cheap, and weekly rates available. - friendly staff - the reception is in a convenience ... ...- dark and dingy - can be too quiet at times, like a no-mans land - some of the people who stay there are very strange. Many Aussie hostels will only allow non-Aussies to stay. This hostel is an exception, which means it is a haven for some dodgy people who have nowhere else to go. Rumours of a murder in one of the rooms + drug-dealers were floating around. I feel bad saying this because the staff were so lovely, but there were some very creepy guests, ...
