me and my husband just got back from this hotel and while i had my reservations about this hotel from reading many reviews on many sites, and the fact that we actually got a great deal on it too, the Melia did not disapoint..while its not a 5* in itself...the staff are the ones who truely make it a 5* to rival the best in the world!
mosquitos are bad...but granted bugs are bad in canada in the spring and summer too :) bring bug spray or as the Cubans like to say about their own solution to the bugs drink more rum to make your less aware of them and the mosquitos drunk too ;)
We went on one excursion that was a full day trip to the provinces capital and went to a museum, crocodile farm, a boat ride, and to the sugar mill on a locomotive, which i have to admit was absolutly amazing...a little pricey (75 CUC ) but when you take into consideration that Cayo Coco is an ISLAND linked to the mainland...it can almost be understood :) it was a lot of fun though!
The beaches are fantastic, the pool was a little cold(but again for January in Canada it would be frozen) and the ocean was really amazing, HUGE waves. there were always lounge chairs available at the beach and the pool and there was always something to do, from spanish lessons, to salsa lessons, to volleyball...or simply relaxing.
We had the standard room and for an extra 39 CUC a night it wasnt worth it to me to upgrade.
The food: well...in my opinion it was absolutly great! I have been to Cuba twice myself and i have learned not to have HUGE expectations, however, every time i am pleasantly suprised. the buffett food was a TAD cold if you werent there as soon as it opened, but the selection was great, and there was really something for everyone!
The beverages were fantastic, but keep in mind...you MUST stir your drinks before having a sip :)
This resort is a 18+ resort, and the ages of guests range from 18-80 :) while the crowd when we were there were mostly in bed by 12, there is a disco just down the road which is a lot of fun too for those younger, or just young at heart.
All in all it was a fantastic holiday and I Can't wait to get back to this hotel again!! Awesome job to everyone at this resort.... P.S - If travelling with Air Canada however, they do not provide meals....come prepared :)
