Caen is the capital of region Basse-Normandy, I spent a year in this small city and happened to to visit this museum twice. I would strongly recommend you to visit the museum BEFORE going to d-day beaches. For person who enjoys history and especially european history, this is the place for you.
This museum emphasizes on d-day history or second world war. It reflects the memorable events that took place in Caen and the region during the summer of 1944. As with all other tourist attractions, all the expositions are explained in French and english. So knowledge of french language is not necessary.
In the beginning, there is little about the history of Caen and how did the war start, then what happened during the war; from point of view of civilians and soldiers. There are also copies of letters sent from soldiers to their homes. You have to READ them, they give alot of information about the war. A quote from one of the letter sent by American soldier to his wife " ...... It seems more like bloody murdrer every day. We are killing french civilians while liberatng them........."
The next room consists of maps which shows the attacks by both parties and layout of ground. Then there are small films which confront you with the past reality.
Then we leave the first section and enters into the second section, which mainly includes 2 long films regarding the landings and second about the violence that has occurred all over the world in the past.
At the beginning or end of your tour, you may buy souvenirs or even books regarding all the happening of the war. The staff is helpful.
If you reside in CAEN, take a proof of residence, you will be eligible for a discount ;) almost 75%.
Enjoy your visit

I think you could usefully give some more detail. From what I remember it is a very large and impressive building and with some excellent exhibits, but you only mention maps, films and soldiers' letters. I agree with you about visitng it before the D-Day beaches - perhaps you could say why.

Last time (July 2006) I went to the Memorial, entry price for an Adult was 17.50 €, 16.00 € for students and 5 € for Residents of Caen (Caennais).
