Advantages: An alternative view of Edinburgh, good guides, fun, interesting
Disadvantages: Could be a bit longer, not much to see on our tour

It's easy to book a place on one of their tours. You can contact the company directly by telephone (in which case you will need to pay in advance by credit card) or by means of their website, or through the Tourist Information Centres in Edinburgh. It's also ...
...so the staff couldn't phone Mercat Tours to check on availability. We were given a phone number for the company but when we phoned them it was then that we learned they required credit card details for phone reservations and we were reluctant to give them out as we were in a busy place at the time. After 10 we went back to the TIC and booked the tickets there. No booking fee is charged by the TIC for this service. We were given a map on which the ... more

Edinburgh's Hideous Hidden City

Advantages: Fascinating
Disadvantages: A little claustrophobic

Edinburgh is an amazing city. For my money, it's architecturally the most beautiful in Britain and it has a history that is truly fascinating. I go there every August for the comedy festival and normally see only the shops, the bars and the comedy venues. This year, however, I was determined to get up earlier than usual and give myself time to take some of the tourist trails. After scouring the net and reading some guide books, my mate and I decided that one thing we must do was take the guided tour of Edinburgh's hidden underground vaults run by Mercat Tours. Edinburgh's underground vaults have only recently been uncovered after lying abandoned and full of waste for many years. Now open to the public on accompanied viewings only, accessible only via huge locked doors which look like any others in the city's winding old streets ...

Review of Hidden Underground Vaults Tour, Edinburgh

Spooky

Advantages: a good, informative, spooky, historic attraction
Disadvantages: cold, dark, narrow (but it adds to the fun)

You have to have an imagination for this one and you also have to be "into" history. I fit both categories and if there's gore & death thrown in as well then I'm hooked! The tours can be booked in advance by telephone, Mercat Tours number is best gotten from Edinburgh tourist office as they can also tell you which tours are available while your on the phone. You don't have to pay when booking, just reserve your place. You start this tour by meeting up at the old magistrates building half way up the Royal Mile. This is about a 15 minute walk from Waverly Train Station but beware, it's all up-hill (and it's a very steep hill). Your Mercat tour guide then gives you an introduction to the tour you're about to take then leads you down to the locked door into the Close. It is very eerie once you're inside....... I'm not going ...

Review of Mary King's Close, Edinburgh

If you only visit one Scottish city...

Advantages: An excellent place to spend a weekend or more. Lots to see and do. Plenty of places to spend your money. Great pubs, great people. Nice scenery surrounding the city. Easy to get to.
Disadvantages: Quite a lot of hills. Some of them are viciously steep.

on and off the tour buses as you wish, all day, for free, visiting any of the places of interest that caught your eye on the tour. Mercat Tours operates several tours in Edinburgh. Some are just plain old ghost walks, in which the tour guides make every effort to scare you to death with their fictional tales, but the one I opted for, was the Mary King's Close tour. I'd heard about this place on a TV programme years ago, Billy Connolly's World Tour of Scotland. I've already written an opinion on this place, so I won't go over too many details again. Mary King's Close is an Old Town street, once infected by the bubonic plague resulting in the occupants being locked in and left to die. Now, the close is open to the public. It is completely concealed now, since the City Chambers were built on top of it, but rumour has it that some ...
