The web site is really colourful, very easy to use and has loads of pages ... ...next I decided to call Mercury Direct to check a few things. The phone was answered very promptly. The lady explained that all the reservationists were busy and took my name and number and said they'll call back. Having a telephonist do this is a good idea; I'm not left hanging on, paying the bill. Someone called me back 10 minutes later. She was very efficient. She checked availability, explained the flights to me and told me more about the hotel. ... more

Mercury Direct advertise their holidays on the internet and in the newspapers. As far as I am aware they have no travel agent in the high street. I found them purely by accident whilst trying to find somewhere hot for a holiday next January.
The web site is really colourful, very easy to use and has loads of pages to view. It sells holidays for Malta, Cyprus, Madeira, Barbados, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, South Africa, Fuji and Australia. It explains quite clearly about each holiday destination and then tells you in detail about individual hotels. It also has a section called Newspaper offers. Here it displays the holidays that you find in the back pages of the newspapers and it gives you more details.
For all the holidays you can find out about the price, the availability and check about flights. It is easy to understand what you are expected to pay, but I found the flight section complicated. You can also type in travel dates and it will tell you what your options are.
So, next I decided to call Mercury Direct to check a few things. The phone was answered very promptly. She checked availability, explained the flights to me and told me more about the hotel. She took my address and arranged to send me a holiday brochure, so I had more detail. To many this is great. Often people are reluctant to buy on the internet (me included) because you haven't got details/pictures in front of you of what you are buying. The call then ended. There was no pressure to buy now. She was just really helpful.
I then had to deliver the hard sell to my husband and persuade him it's a great idea to go there.
The brochure arrived a couple of days later. It just as well laid out as the web site. Like most brochures, each country has a section. It gives similar detail to the internet and explains a bit more about the area. The flights are also easier to understand in the brochure. You can see clearly when and where you have to pay a flight supplement. The are also offers in the brochure, similar to on the web, for example "Go 2 weeks All Inclusive, Get a 3rd week free". That is a fantastic offer in my opinion.
My husband was impressed, so I called back and booked it. I managed to speak to the same lady as before because I think it's important she gets the commission. She went through the booking very efficiently. Explained about the deposit and when my invoice will arrive. It was all dealt with within 5 minutes. I was very impressed.
Now all I have to do is start working on my body and count down the months until the holiday. Hopefully I can write a positive review when I come back.
I would defiantly use this site again to search for a holiday and would recommend it to anyone.
Advantages: Cheap - thats about it! Disadvantages: Dangerous Inadequate Accommodation, Questionable Business Ethics and Poor Customer Service!
...claiming to be 3* accommodation, Mercury had no intention of accepting any kind of blame!
Here is a list of the problems;
My apartment had a steep internal staircase leading down into the living area, the stair railing was broken and absolutely dangerous! breaking just about every Health and Safety rule going. This was eventually fixed (albeit inadequately, to break again later) on the third day of our visit.
The Safe door in my apartment had, ... ...recently.
I visited with Mercury Direct / Sunspot and quite honestly they should be ashamed of themselves - not just for overselling these apartments as 3 star!!! but also for their inability to deal with a serious customer complaint. Given their reply I honestly don't think that they even bothered to read my letter, I was not even asking for compensation just an acknowledgment that they had got it wrong!
I will never use Mercury Direct / Sunspot ...

Quick review of Mercury Direct
My wife and I have just returned from a holiday at the Club Bali Mirage, Bali, booked through Mercury Direct. There were absolutely no hitches from start to finish and we found the hotel to be pretty well faultless. Good facilities, excellent staff who could not do enough for you and good quality dining. The hotel is well situated next to the beach and within easy reach of shops. With only 90 or so rooms the hotel has an intimate and very friendly atmosphere about it. Had some memorable trips around Bali and made many new friends. We would not hesitate to recommend the hotel and Mercury Direct to future customers. ...

Advantages: they tried to get me the lowest price! and the destination is lovely! Disadvantages: the time went too quickly!!!
...recently went to mauritius with Mercury Direct and thought it was fantastic! I had an all inclusive package at the heritage golf resort and spa and me and my husband loved every minute of it. The hotel itself was at an excellent standard and our operator Mercury Direct remained proffessional throughout- as this was my first "long-haul" destination that i had ever been to i was apprehensive about going but the lady the other end of the phone knew ... ...of the evening meals and the types of watersports at the nearest beach,any question she didnt know the answer to she simply said that she would email out to the rep out there which she did and she called me back with answer with 2 days!
By the time my holiday eventually came around i knew everything to expect even though ive never been further then blackpool before!!!! ...

Advantages: Excellent value for money, excellent service, highly professional staff. Disadvantages: None! - a brilliant company... it was a pleasure doing business
...a holiday to Malta with Mercury Direct/Sunspot Tours and have to say i was 100% satisfied with the organization and quality of the holiday. From the moment i called the lady i spoke to was professional, efficient and most of all knowledgable. She gave me sound and good quality advice, and helped me choose a great holiday.

Me my wife and daughter have just returned from club palm garden (9th Sept), the hotel is basic but clean and good food. Friendly staff and lots of activities, which to be honest at times does give it a slightly butlins/pontins feel!! We liked it that much we have booked to go back for christmas and we have not been back a week!! We are however not staying at club palm, we are staying at a guest house about 500m away, this was after we made good friends with a group of "Beach boy's", we travelled with Mercurydirect and did not arrive in resort until 22:00 on monday after leaving at 09:30 the previous sunday, but our rep called us at 07:45 the next morning asking us to meet him in reception!
