It's hard to review somewhere like the Merrion Hotel, its just such an awing experience. We went to the Merrion as a special pre Christmas weekend to Dublin. I had not stayed there before and was going purely on its reputation and the recommendation of my partner, who had stayed before.

The Merrion Hotel, Upper Merrion Street, Dublin 2, Ireland, was a delightful experience from the moment we decided to visit it. As you approach it you are immediately put at ease as it effortlessly blends into the surrounding Georgian street so characteristic of Dublin. The building subtly charms and intrigues you into entering to see what lies behind its unimposing facade.

We were staying just a few weeks before Christmas and the hotel was sensitively and stylishly decked out for Christmas.

Arrival
=====

All pretence of normality just vanishes as soon as you arrive; you are immediately approached by an immaculately caped valet who takes cases from the car and keys so that the car can be parked for you. The only effort you have to exert is to walk into the reception. The front door is as if you are entering just another Dublin townhouse. On entering you are immediately taken over by what is undoubtedly a very prestigious, opulent but characteristically Irish hotel. Classically decorated, the walls are adorned with very attractive paintings.

I am rarely overpowered by much in life but I was completely disarmed by what I found. On waiting to be dealt with, I noticed a maturity in the staff which I found reassuring.

We went to do some shopping whilst we awaited the room being prepared. Our bags had been taken on arrival and we did not see them again until we returned, by which they had been brought to our room and our coats had been hung in the wardrobes.

Rooms
======

We were staying in the a Garden Wing Deluxe. When I entered I was just totally surprised by the quality of the room which had a superb King Size bed. The room exuded taste and style throughout.

Even more impressive was the bathroom which was more than 5 star in terms of quality, with marble everywhere you looked. The furniture was of a very high standard. Like the rest of the hotel the Merrion rooms were spotlessly clean and very well maintained.

Service
======

The quality did not stop just at the arrival. We were going out that night, and as usual I was not as prepared as I should have been. I contacted room service to see if I could get an iron. In fact the room service just took the two shirts (I couldn't decide which to wear) away and returned them about 30 minutes later very well pressed.

No coffee making facilities in the room, a major downside one would think, not so at the Merrion, within minutes as if from next door you are delivered a Latte Coffee. And you get a casual knock on the door to see if you need a refill in your ice box.

Room service does cost but, surprisingly, not excessively so. The coffee was about €2.50 [£1.60] similar to what you would pay in a cafe. The two shirts cost €7.00 [£4.50] to press.

Food & Drink
===========

We did not get a chance to use the world renowned restaurant, where the resident chief is Patrick Guilbaud. This is the main reason that we will be returning, soon.

We dinned at "La Stampa" restaurant that evening. I have reviewed there hotel in another review, also well worth a wisit. The food here was good, but is currently being renovated and I hope to review the new restaurant when it opens. Enough of La Stampa though.

We decided to return to the hotel rather than going clubbing. In the bar we had a bottle of Champagne, Bollinger which cost €90 [about £60]. In hindsight about what we would have spent on a club. We were continually pampered by the staff who refilled the glasses throughout the evening. This just topped off what had been a great evening to date.

As usual, we ordered breakfast in bed. Our experience after that was anything but usual. In the morning it was not a tray that arrived but rather a hot trolly which converted into a fold out table, with full silver service laid out for us. The food was very nice!!!! When finished we phoned and the table was whisked away. And all of this included in the price as well.

Departure
========

Departure was just as smooth and professional as every other part of the experience. Our cases were escorted to the reception and placed into the rear of the car, which just seemed to appear from nowhere, by our caped valet. The staff were excellent, and so knowledgeable.

Price
====

The Merrion is not a low cost hotel, but was not as pricey as one would expect. We paid € 260 [£180], this was an offer, but it was a Saturday night and just 2 weeks before Christmas. Excellent value for the premier 5 star in Dublin. Look out on their website for special deals

This was an absolute experience in quality living, and at what I consider a very reasonable price. Staying in Dublin? - then I suggest you treat yourself to the Merrion - you certainly won't regret it!!!!!!
