Long before I first visited Liverpool which was back in 1959 when I docked at the port on returning to UK from Sierra Leone, I had heard of the famous Mersey Ferry. Then in the 1960's when the Mersey Sound dominated popular music, Gerry and the Pacemaker's had a gigantic hit with "Ferry Cross the Mersey". Later it was to become the anthem for the supporters of that great club Liverpool FC.
When I visited Liverpool again in the 1970s I did not have enough time to take a trip on the Ferry and it was only in 1992,when visiting my daughter, who was studying at Liverpool University, that I actually "Crossed the Mersey"for the first time. I had further trips in 1993 and 1998 and found it was an interesting way of travelling in Merseyside. Visually much more interesting than going through the tunnels or by tube train.
I boarded the ferry at the Pier Head and thoroughly enjoyed my trip to the Wirral. The ferry is comfortable enough and seemed to attract a lot of exuberant youngsters, mothers with babes, and foreign visitor. Fortunately on the four occasions I have travelled on the ferry, the weather has been kind. Actually I prefer the return journey from the Wirral to Liverpool because the views over the city are fabulous from the Mersey. You get wondeful views of the trio of great buildings on the Pier Head and some of the other taller buildings in the city centre. When the sun shining, the views of "The Pool" are glorious and worth the price of the ferry trip.
There are relatively few cities in England where you get the chance of a trip across a big river, Dartmouth in Devon comes to mind, but somehow the "Ferry Cross the Mersey" is my favourite.

Thank you very much for your kind comments which are much appreciated. I think a lot of the ill informed
criticism of Liverpool is based on ignorance. If people actually visited the city they would, I feel
change their opinion.

Its nice to know people still appreciate Liverpool and what a wonderful city it is, as we are usually getting Bad Publicity off the Manchester based press.
As you say the view travelling from Birkenhead of the Liver Buildings, etc is spine tingling...
