Public transport should carry a Health Warning. I live in a little village, which is poorly served by train and bus ‘services’. The trains run at 7am and 8 am, then every hour from 9.30 am until 6.30 pm, then they stop. The buses are a little better, and run every half hour from 7.50 am to 6.55 pm, then change to an hourly service at 6.35 pm, the final bus to the village is at 10.55 pm. The nearest Town is around 6 miles away (as the crow flies).
... ...when the ‘powers that be’ decided ‘to address the problem’ on the local bypass, the solution added another 15 minutes onto my journey. I’m not too impatient when driving around, however, I do get annoyed when ’cut up’ by other road users –so to remove the stress factor from the morning race, I decided to ‘go green’, help the ozone and use the trains. I also travel around the country for the organisation, so I know all about Virgin trains (the less ...

Advantages: Big trains Disadvantages: Uncomfortable, Old, Manky, what more is there
Merseyrail electrics, recently taken over by Arriva has been serving the Liverpool community for about 25 years and so have the same trains by the looks of things.
You see, Merseyrail are really fast and delays are a No No but I think the owners do not realise that the rolling stock are not comfortable.
I think they are called AMU rolling stock which have been in operation for about 15-20 years. Over the years the rolling stock has never been painted, ... ...going.
I know that Merseyrail have trouble with the bogies (the wheels) on the trains as there are a mirago of tight bends on the underriver section of the track which apparently bends the wheels. The fact remains though that there are no toilets on the trains and the seats are too uncomfortable to sit on.
On another note though, the company makes the trains quite big and even in rush hour there are still plenty of seats. The trains are clean inside ...

Advantages: Cheap, but certainly not cheerful. Sucidal more like. Disadvantages: Dirty, smelly, understaffed (and even then they are unhelpful and rude), unrelaible........
...Chester from Liverpool Central with Merseyrail run by our good friends Arriva (yuck). I have to say I was pleasantly suprised when the moody ticket man barked the fare for me and my niece to travel to Chester for a day out (look, I was desperate, OK?). I paid the fare and was thrown 4 little orange cards through the hole in the bullet proof box. As anybody who travels by train through Liverpool Central (run by Arriva/Merseytravel), it isn't the cleanest ... ...voice booms out that the Merseyrail service has been delayed, and the next train was due at 20 past five. The fair amount of passengers where angry. But this crowd multiplied at least 4 times over when the 17.20 finally pulled in, and I had to stand in the filthy train for all of the journey (50mins). The conducter was more interested in fining a teenager with obvious learning difficulties over 25p than answering up to the unacceptable state of affairs. ...

Advantages: Reliable and Frequent Services Disadvantages: Train interiors can be messy
Merseyrail are my local rail service, only a short walk from my house to the station, and I use the trains very frequently for both leisure and commuting, and have done since the early 90s.
Personally I think Merseyrail offer a fantastic commuter service. I have visited plenty of places that have trains every hour, or maybe longer than that. But if you are travelling on the Merseyrail Network, you get trains every 15 minutes during weekdays and ... ...old style interiors etc, but Merseyrail have now refurbished every one of the 59 units since the last review, and each train has been given a completely new look, both inside and outside and they look as good as new. Some of the reviews mentioned 'yobs' being a problem. Well there is obviously little Merseyrail can do about this, but what they have done is to install CCTV on all trains and stations. Also, if you are travelling in the evening you ...

...minute drive from Chester. It's also only a 35 minute detour from the main M1/M6 London to Scotland Motorway. If approaching from Liverpool you will drive through the original Mersey tunnel (Queensway tunnel) but be warned there is a toll fee.
By Train
Port Sunlight is extremely well served by the MerseyrailElectrics Service. The Wirral Line joins staions between Chester, Ellsmere Port and Liverpool James St., Moorfields, Central and Lime Street stations , Lime Street is the mainline intercity station which easily connects with the local Merseyrail, Wirral line trains. Trains run approximately every 15 minutes, in either direction, from around 6am until midnight on the Wirral Line.
Personally I would love to live here but not really much chance of that as very rarely do the houses come up for sale with the walls of the orignal village...
