Merseyrail electrics, recently taken over by Arriva has been serving the Liverpool community for about 25 years and so have the same trains by the looks of things.
You see, Merseyrail are really fast and delays are a No No but I think the owners do not realise that the rolling stock are not comfortable.
I think they are called AMU rolling stock which have been in operation for about 15-20 years. Over the years the rolling stock has never been painted, or redesigned to suit the needs of customers today. The seats are litteraly a cushion with a piece of cloth stapled around it and Paying in excess of a couple of pounds for a fifteen minute journey into town leaves it to be said that where is all the money going.
I know that Merseyrail have trouble with the bogies (the wheels) on the trains as there are a mirago of tight bends on the underriver section of the track which apparently bends the wheels. The fact remains though that there are no toilets on the trains and the seats are too uncomfortable to sit on.
On another note though, the company makes the trains quite big and even in rush hour there are still plenty of seats. The trains are clean inside but the deign and the safety remains to be seen. Hence the title Welcome aboard the Tin Can express. Although they have many good things, the trains need updating. Liverpool is being rebuilt so why isn't Merseyrail moving with the times.
For your information, trains go all over the north west to Southport, St. Hellens, Chester, Birkenhead and many other places. Arriva own nearly three hundred pieces of rolling stock including cranes, passenger carraiges and diesel shunters. Stop moaning they provide a very good service. Actually, being as no one has commented on this review since april 2002, merseyrail has now begun updating it's trains, and the new ones are marvellous to say the least, if a little thin on the ground.

Great review - interesting to see your rains run on time over there - Arriva in Yorkshire certainly don't - up to 10% of their services every day get cancelled! This has prompted the consumer-site www.arrivasucks.com Great review - VH!
