A good choice for people wanting to experience traditional Malagan cuisine at its best and at a good price. Assets: Good quality ingredients, professional service, excellent wine list and the possibility to order half portions.
Advantages: Great location in a safe area of Old Havana, Great food & music Disadvantages: noise from the bar and restaurant downstairs
...El Meson de la Flota: Mercaderes b/ Amargura and Teniente Rey. Old Havana, Ciudad de La Habana, situated a few steps from the Old Square.
La Meson de la Flota is found in a safe and renovated area of Old Havana. It is in fact more like a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel per se, but has the advantage of excellent food at reasonable prices (for tourist eating places - £10 for a lobster brochette, rice and salad - very filling and delicious) and live music every night with Cubano-Flamenco concerts. The drinks, especially Mojitos were great too and won't break the bank (£3-£4 each).
The rooms have very high ceilings and are clean and newly painted, although the state of the bathroom lets the place down a bit, with a bit more wear and tear than I would expect in a hotel. However there was a fridge in the room which...

...If you are not used to real Spanish food, Meson Bilbao could appear a good option between the thousand restaurants in London. However if you love quality food and enjoy an attentive service, this is not the place for you. Entering the restaurant I was first shocked discovering that no one in the staff was Spanish; the chef is from Philippines and I suppose the only way he knows Spain is by post card.
The service was really slow, even if the restaurant was almost empty, and my husband and I had to wait one hour to order.
When our paella arrived, the fish was clearly frozen, the rice overcooked and the bread almost green.
To complete our devastating experience, before leaving Meson Bilbao a little mouse passed between my legs. I hope at least he enjoyed the food in the restaurant....

Advantages: Shops etc open late, Beautiful Beach, Amazing Cathedral. Disadvantages: Noisy, dirty, has Bull Ring.
...I've not even been back a week, but feels like months ago that I went to Malaga. Back in the cold and gloom!
I have never been to Spain before, and the decission was partly due to availability. I was waiting on the return of my Passport from Passport House, and so no holiday could be booked until then. I booked online at about midnight on 11/01/03, and we flew out at 6.25am on 12/01/03. So no time to buy phrase book, or learn any lingo! This was our downfall.
If I advise anything, it's take a phrase book. On our return a friend kindly told me that you will deffinately have more fun out there if you can speak some Spanish. (Thanks, that's real helpful now!) Once out there, we could not find any Phrase Books, and did not even find a Guide Book in English until our third day! I felt held back by this, and would deffinately want...
