A Green Oasis In The City
Advantages: Loads of free stuff to see and do Disadvantages: Can be busy at weekends
...de Chapultepec, also known as Chapultepec Park is a 1600 acre expanse of green space to one side of Mexico City Centre, which has been a public park since the 16th Century, and remains one of the largest in the world. Within its gates there are many different things to see and do, and I have whiled away many a weekend here.
LOCATION
The park is located on the outskirts of the city, to the west of the main attractions such as the Zócalo. I have ... ...* The Castillo de Chapultepec (fun fact: where they filmed the Leo DiCaprio version of Romeo and Juliet) is on top of a hill towards the east side of the park. You can either climb it yourself, which takes maybe 10 - 15 minutes of hiking, or you can ride up in the fugly train (one of those mini-trains you often find in seaside resorts). I have climbed it twice and never caught the fugly train, and the climb is really not as bad as the train drivers ...

The Floating Gardens of Mexico City
Advantages: Unique day or half day trip Disadvantages: A fair distance out of town
Having lived in Mexico City since the start of July, I can't believe it's taken me over 3 months to visit this place, since it's one of the most famous attractions in the city and has been since the 1920s. Xochimilco (soch-ee-milk-oh) is an area located to the south of the city, known for its series of canals, the remains of old Lake Xochimilco. Quick trivia here, this was home to canoeing and rowing competitions when Mexico hosted the Olympics back ... ...To Go ~
Xochimilco isn't just a bit south of the city, it's a long way away, so much so that it took me over an hour to get there and I already live south of the centre. Metros only run as far as Tasqueña (end of Line 2, the blue one) and from there you can either catch the Tren Ligero ("electric train" or as I would call it...a tram) or take a Pasero (mini-bus). The former costs 2 pesos per trip, the latter about 3 pesos, and with both the final ...

Land of Giants
Advantages: Really pretty Disadvantages: You're supposed to go on 12th Dec...but that's when EVERYONE goes
The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in northern Mexico City is the most visited Catholic shrine in this part of the world. Every year on December 12th, tens of thousands of tourists flock here to celebrate the appearance of the Virgin here in 1531. Not really the pilgrimaging kind, I chose to go on a Friday in August, but even then it was far from quiet.
The Basílica is so revered because in 1531, apparently, a brown-skinned Virgin appeared ... ...out more about the wondrous appearance here: http://www.sacred-destinations.com/mexico/mexico-city-basilica-guadalupe.ht m ). This was before the days when anyone with Photoshop could sell pictures of the Virgin appearing on their toast or in a slice of cheese to trashy tabloids, and therefore it was taken quite seriously. So seriously in fact that it's now a must-see tourist trap for many people in the region, and of course the scene of some spectacular ...

HISTORY
Templo Mayor, or the Great Temple was built by the Aztecs in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was almost completely destroyed some years later when the Spanish conquerors arrived, and the bit that was left was hidden under what is now Mexico City. It wasn't until 1978 that people realised it was there, thanks to the chance discovery of an unusual carving, and in the 30 years since then an on-again, off-again program of excavation has been ... ...been excavated can be seen by passersby walking near the Cathedral, but to get a proper look at it, you have to pay to enter the grounds and attached museum. Or, like us, you can go on a Sunday when it's free of charge. THE GROUNDS
The first part you enter is the remains of the grounds that have been uncovered, which form the outdoor part of the museum. This part takes maybe 15 to 30 minutes depending on how much information you want to read, and ...

A Blue House With A Blue Window...
Advantages: Interesting place to visit Disadvantages: Crowded at weekends
Frida Kahlo (her with the monobrow) is one of Mexico's most famous citizens, and the area of Mexico City in which she lived - Coyoacán - is dotted with various houses, studios and parks named after her. The most well known and well visited of these is the Casa Azul, or the Blue House. I have been here twice and, in true random style, also taught a class on the place since one of my (UK published) EFL text books has a reading exercise on it.
FRIDA ... ...Frida Kahlo was born and lived most of her life, acquiring it from her parents. She was a Mexican painter whose style was a mixture of many things - realism, surrealism, symbolism - and she, um, had a pet monkey. Married to the equally famous (at least in Mexico) muralist Diego Rivera, she died in 1954. The house was turned into a museum a few years later, following Diego's death. Diego and Frida had an odd relationship, that included various affairs ...
