Fun times at the Catalonia
Advantages: Beautiful location, great amenities, suites were fab Disadvantages: Buffet could have had a greater offering of Mexican food
Visited the Catalonia in Oct 2008 as part of a package deal from Thomsons (on a side note the flight could have been better - there was a charge for almost everything, £5 for a blanket, upgrade to watch movies!!!!).
we were shown to our room and it was very basic, with a few probs (too close to the elevator). we asked to move rooms and the conceirge were very helpful and moved us to a more suitable room straight away! i had read before that you ... ...day and all i can say is that it was definitely worth the money as the suite was AMAZING.
as for the rest of the hotel, the staff were lovely and couldn't be more helpful. would definitely recommend the Teppanyaki restaurant. as for the buffet, it was fine but i was a little disappointed that there wasnt enough authentic Mexican food on offer. the drinks were lovely, and the barman in the swim up pool especially was fantastic.
we did 2 excursions, ...

A Superb hotel
Advantages: Give it a go Disadvantages: Not much
Riu Yucatan Mexico.
We stayed here last year and to be honest it was a fairly decent hotel.
In need of a little TLC but otherwise Not bad.
Trip from the airport takes about 40 minutes and you see some deprived areas, not a pleasant start to your holiday and you eventually reach the high gated communities which contain the multitude of 3, 4 and 5 star hotels.
You are now in Playa del Carmen.
The hotel is one of the Riu brand ... ...Riu Palace and similarly just over the road is the hotels sister the Tequila and a little up the road the Riu Playacar.
Situated right on the beach the hotel has a prime location but beware there is not all that much shade on the beach as the static palm leaved sunshade often have holes in them as so you will find yourself rotating around the umbrella pole if it’s a bit of shade you crave.
Better to laze around the pools where respite can easily ...

An Oasis in the middle of Mexico
Advantages: The price, location, staff, food Disadvantages: damp rooms
...for our first night in oasis viva beach.
Okay so the room on the second floor was not good, not only did it have a crappy view of a palm tree it stank of damp, the room itself wasn’t bad, it had 2 double beds, a nice wee balcony with table and chairs, plenty of clothes storage, air conditioning and a TV, there were no tea and coffee making facilities but when it comes to all inclusive this is really not required….the bathroom however was a bit manky ... ...to stay in the grand oasis viva beach you get a different coloured wrist band which is black and this means you get a few more extra perks which include a mini fridge in your room in which all contents are free and updated daily, room service from a limited menu, access to a VIP bar (which always looked empty mind) and also free dining in the steak restaurant…..but as we were only here for one night we didn’t make use of any of these things.
One ...

Mexico's Party Paradise Hotel!
Advantages: Great hotel, service and location Disadvantages: Some people can be quite loud
Paradise in Mexico! The Riu Cancun is an amazing hotel, the location is great, the service is great & the people/staff are great. ------------
Location
------------
The Riu Cancun is in Cancun, Mexico. It is situated about 20 minutes from Cancun Airport. This is great as transfers are easy and not too long, especially after a 10 and a half hour flight. The airport is a reasonable size and very modern. The Riu Cancun is located in the heart of ... ...too close that all you can hear is constant music/noise/drunks from the hotel. The main club/bar strip is only a 5 minute walk from the front door of the Riu. ----------------
The Resort
----------------
Cancun is known for its party atmosphere, spring break and that general 18-30's atmosphere. If this is what you think, you are completely wrong. Although Cancun has great nightlife it also has a quieter side to it. The clubs mostly cost an all ...

Moon Palace - all inclusive luxury
Advantages: An away from it all oasis - that will cater for your every need Disadvantages: Isolated from main resort
The scale of the Moon Palace is hard to comprehend - we arrived at night and after check in we meandered our way through to our room - it seemed a long way. The walkways to the rooms are covered and uncovered - however the covered ones are laid out in such a way that it is possible to get all the way back to your room without getting wet should it rain. We went in the June and it was prone to the odd shower but then immediately warmed agained. The ... ...are gound, 1st and 2nd floor, so lots of ground floor rooms.
The rooms are fabulous - a large queen sized bed, a large jacquzi bath at the end of the bed seating area, TV, large bathroom with a very large shower with a seat in it. And all the usual facilities you expect in a hotel of this stature. The doors are not air tight so if you don't have the air conditioning on at night you might find a few friends in the room with you by morning - we were ...
