The Midland Hotel, Manchester

Advantages: Recently refitted
Disadvantages: They forgot the health club!

Recently stayed in The Midland for one night, and was pleasantly surprised by the recent refurbishment it's undergone. Having not been to this hotel for a couple of years, the changes have really breathed some life back into what had been a crumbling relic. The room was very nice, a good size, and well fitted in terms of what was available and space, as was the bathroom. One complaint I would have was that the mini-bar automatically charges you for anything moved - which isn't very good if you're other half likes to fiddle with stuff. I didn't dine in either of the two hotel restaurants - The French and The Colony - but they both looked ok, and the buffet breakfast, served in The Colony, was the best I've had at any hotel for a good few years. A good selection of cereals and fruit as well as a selection of standard hot items, which ...

Hercule Poirot would love the results

Advantages: : A chance to relive Art Deco life in modern surroundings
Disadvantages: Expensive

of the rounded cafe at the north end of the hotel was painted by another well-known artist Eric Ravilious. As the café was originally intended for the use of casual visitors to the beach its walls were painted with seaside themes by day and night. Unfortunately, due to insufficient preperation the wall needed to be painted over completely two years later. In 1989 the mural was reconstructed for the episode of the TV detective series "Agatha Christie's Poirot" which was partly set in the hotel. The new Midland Hotel opened on Wednesday 12th July 1933. Immediately after its opening the Midland Hotel quickly became the place to stay for the wealthy middle classes from across the north of England. Yorkshire mill-owners and businessmen took whole suites for the summer, travelling by train from the station opposite to Leeds and Bradford in the morning ...

Bradford Travelodge - I do!

Advantages: Basic but good budget accommodation; easy for non-drivers to get to
Disadvantages: A little way from centre of city; no breakfast other than packaged tray type

Plans for a weekend break to Bradford (yes, really) arose from a Travelodge promotion in which room prices started at just £5 a night. I was looking for ideas for the OH?s birthday and wanted a destination that wasn?t too far away and where the Travelodge wasn?t in the middle of nowhere; Bradford seemed possible. Although I wasn?t able to get the cheapest rate, I was happy enough with a charge of £19 per night for the room. While this Travelodge isn?t ?in the middle of nowhere?, neither is it in the centre of the city. However, as curry was to be the central theme of the weekend, and the hotel is situated in the suburb of Thornbury which has many highly recommended restaurants, I didn?t mind too much that the location wasn?t central. There were frequent buses to the city centre, a journey that takes only ten minutes and New Pudsey ...
