Midland Strainline *UPDATE*

Advantages: Frequent trains, free tea and coffee
Disadvantages: Frequent delays, high ticket prices, uncomfortable Turbostars

* NOTE: This route has been taken over by Stagecoach as East Midlands Trains. * I have been travelling on Midland Mainline almost every working day for over five years from my home in Leicestershire to work in London. I have seen it all. When the service works well, and you are aboard one of their High Speed Trains (HSTs) as opposed to their Turbostars, it is a good way of getting about. For the occasional journey to the Midlands, and now to Manchester, I would recommend it. But sadly, a lot of the time it is a complete shambles. Trains are routinely late (and that means more than 10 minutes late in railway terms) or cancelled. It has been getting worse. This is not just my impression. All rail companies must publish performance statistics, including reliability (percentage of trains cancelled) and on-time performance ...

East Midlands Airport

Advantages: Easily accessed, not too busy
Disadvantages: Not a huge range of destinations

East Midlands Airport is a regional airport located in Castle Donington in Derbyshire. There are flights available to many European destinations, as well as Egypt, USA (Florida) and the Caribbean with charter airlines. I have flown from this airport many times and it is my favourite airport mainly due to it's location, ease of access and relaxed atmosphere. It is easily accessed by car from the M1 (Junction 23 and 23A) or the A50 which is the road I use when travelling from Staffordshire. I live around 50 miles from the airport but the A50 is a relatively quiet road so it's a nice 40 minute drive and I can start my holiday. I find it's easiest to travel to by car but there are local rail links and the airport can be reached from Loughborough, Derby and Nottingham railway stations, depending on where in the country you are ...

West Midlands Safari Park

Advantages: Fun day out, Lots to see
Disadvantages: Not everythings included in the entrance price

West Midlands Safari Park A large safari park between Kidderminster and Bewdly. It's easy to get to from main motorways. It is also signed from most main roads which are easy to follow and take you straight to where you want to be. You can choose to either drive around the safari park first or go into the main area which has a petting zoo, displays, shops and much more. Once you get there, there is plentiful parking for both cars and coaches, it's free to park and disabled parking is available nearer to the entrance. As you enter there is a row of shops in a covered area with a gift shop that you can visit either then or on your way out, there is a shop to purchase foods such as ice cream and fudge and various drinks, which can be enjoyed on your way around the attraction. There are displays going on all day including sea ...
