Flights for a pound, how could I turn it down? Flying from Birmingham with Flybe to Milan Bergamo Airport was a new experience for me but the journey to Birmingham Airport is just over an hour from home and the parking is so close to the airport that you don't really need to get the courtesy bus.
On arrival at Bergamo there is a Bus to main Centro train station just o/s arrivals for just a few euros with a journey time of around 40 mins.
The hotel we chose - the Concorde was out of the City Centre but on one of the 3 tube lines and you could in fact walk in approx 20 mins. The hotel was, however, very luxurious and there was a fantastic Gelateria (ice cream shop) a couple of doors down and lots of other shops on the way to the Duomo which made up for the walk.
Aside from the tube there area also trams and buses and you can buy a single ticket which is valid on all of these. Once you have validated your ticket you get 75 mins to use it and you must validate it every time you change from one mode of transport to another.
Milan is fantastic for shopping - shoes of course and a gorgeous Coccinelle handbag retailing in the UK for £130 for £67. For Designers go to Via Montenapoleon and Galleria Vittorio Emmanuelle is a beautiful building with some interesting (and some not so) shops. La Rinascente also has some bargains and household items such as crockery, utensils in every available colour
The 14th Century Cathedral Duomo is gorgeous and if you have the legs it is worth getting up on to the Terrace (roof) for some fascinating architechture - if you can't make it, take the lift to the rooftop cafe in Rinascente where you get a good view of the fantastic amount of work that has gone into the Duomo. Unfortunately, due to the industrial smog you don't always get a great view from the roof - it was a lovely sunny day but we struggled to see the San Siro stadium which is only a few KMs away.
Whilst Milan is very industrial but there are a couple of other highlights:-
Castello Sforesco museum - also walk out back where it has been set out like an English Park with a few places to get a drink/snack and a few souvenirs. The Central train station is also a beautiful building
There are a lot of hawkers in the Duomo area but a polite no normally works and you must learn to cross the road like an Italian!
I don't think I've ever seen so many McDonalds within such a small area but there are also some nice places to eat - we found a good restaurant just off Piazza Spizzico where you can sit inside or out.
The weather was very warm when we visited at the end of April so you might want to pack some shorts!
