Milton Keynes area is East of Buckingham. The new town was originally meant to house about a quarter of a million people in 1991.It takes in several villages,Woughton, Simpson and Loughton as well as Stony Stratford, on the A5.
Stony Stratford is where the" cock and ball "story came from, as it has a cock and ball inn.It is rich in history but like alot of areas, has been subject to fires in the 18th century.
In Milton Keynes itself there are still a few very nice thatched cottages to be seen, dating back to about the 17th century also there is churches, one of which has a good south doorway and porch.
The town area is set out very well. _________________________
Travel into and out of town can become a bit hetic on some of the road areas. The central train station is at Elder gate, Near to the main street Midsummer boulevard. This you need to go along for the shopping (I will talk about that later). For the bus then you have Milton keynes City Bus at snowdon Drive,Winter Hill.or National Express at Elder Gate, Central Milton Keynes.
Public services can be found at: Saxon Court,Avebury Boulevard this will provide the tourist with the information and tourist office (a good place to start). Other places are the civic offices, saxon Gate,East,Milton Keynes. Central Library, Silbury Boulevard and the post office at Midsummer Arcade, Central Milton Keynes.Police at North Road, and the General Hospital at Standing Way Eaglestone.
Oh but what about things to do.. Well the Point 10 cinema at midsummer Boulevard or sports and leisure areas are all around too many to list here but you have swimming, golf etc..
Well now to the shopping. My favorite in Milton Keynes is as I said along midsummer Boulevard. Inside the large (about 300 shops) area it is undercover and has been refurbished. The area has serveillance cameras, first aid staff, lost and found property service, free taxi ordering, free buggy and rein hire and a shop and see (a shopping escort service for the visually impaired). All this alongside the regular events that are staged there.
There are lots of places to stop off for a bite to eat: coffee Republic, Lindy's, Pizza hut to name a few. Food centres Fatty Arbuckles, Rajdhani and more..Speciality Barrows are also in the arcade selling allsorts Handbags,Frozen yoghurt, Belts and buckles, Flowers and a left hander's paradise again so many. Then, if you want to buy food yourself in the supermarkets, you have sainburys, icelands and waitrose.
The main shops to choose from are the big stores like house of fraser, Boots, John lewis, w.h. smiths.Audio and Video & PC: dixons, Electronic Boutique.
Other sections are: Banks,Books, cards, chemists, cosmetics, fashions for everyone, confectionery, things for the home, hairdressing, photography phones, sports, toys. The list goes on.
There are also toilet facilities, and baby change, plus disabled.Parking space is good and at about 14,000 spaces, most are free. To get there from the M1 you take junction 14 or A5 roads are listed well with signs central shopping and the centre:mk.
If you want even more information then visit WWW.thecentremk.com.
Good op. MK is one of those love/hate kind of places. The shopping centre is great to some or much too big to others. The road system is what every town needs or is a non-starter when it comes to finding a place depending on your view. On balance I like it especially since they built the Xscape so you can use it as a landmark for Central MK from just about anywhere.

Despite the fact we don't live to far away, we don't go to MK too much, but I like the shopping centre - especially now it's expanded with Midsummer Boulevard. And the Leisure Complex 'XSCAPE' is great too

An excellent opinion I too live in a new town East Kilbride in Scotland otherwise known as polo mint city because of the number of roundabouts Cheers Elspeth

Advantages: Great shopping centre, big theatre, environmentally-conscious council Disadvantages: No character, hideous architecture, even worse sculptures
