"Ice skating with wheelchairs? Are you sure?" "Well, you can always go bowling next door if you are scared."
One of my work colleagues and I drove of to Milton Keynes. They seem to have many roundabouts there, but we eventually found the Leisure Park with the Bowling Alley and the Ice Skating Ring (Planet Ice). We went to the Bowling Alley first, to have lunch in the Burger Bar. The students loved it, as there was music and many flashing lights from the game machines around us. Having lunch there wasn't the easiest thing to do, with the Burger Bar having no cutlery around to prepare the food for our students. But we managed.
We then went over to the Ice Skating Ring and paid around seven Pounds (student and carer) to get in. I've been there since and prices have gone up to around 6 Pounds per person due to high demand. So my colleague and I got our skates on and got the wheelchairs onto the ice. As there is a step to get on, this was only manageable with someone else's help or the ramps provided. We arrived in time for the disco they have every Saturday, which meant more flashing lights and music. It was fairly crowded, but we soon noticed, that ice-skating with wheelchairs is much easier than ice skating without them. Soon we figured out, that we can lean on them and got faster and braver. However to break is difficult, the best way of doing this is probably by turning away from whatever you were going to crash into.
We had loads of fun and been there a few times since. They are very accommodating for wheelchair users and as there is a big Toys'R'Us just next door. So definitely a good day out for anyone with kids. As Saturdays do get very crowded though, make sure you phone up before you go there so they can reserve skates in your size.
