I recently returned from a 5 night break in Rome with a girlfriend, staying at the Hotel Milton - at the time of booking we got a real bargain as the whole trip cost £240 including BA flights. Before travelling I confirmed the reservation by email, and the email I received was friendly and professional.

When we arrived we found the hotel very easy to lcoate, literally across the road from the metro (Manzoni stop), and the staff very understanding of two weary travellers and their lack of Italian! The lobby area had an internet point for guests (which we did not use), but was undergoing refurbishment so it was quite messy. We were given a map of Rome and the reception staff marked the main sites and facilties.

The room was clean, if quite small, but had all the expected facilities (flat screen tv, fridge with mini bar, stock of complimentary toiletries). However, the first thing we noticed was the very high noise level - the trams outside sounded like an earthquake had hit, and the general road noise was awful. We asked to be moved and were told that they could not move us that night or the next and we would have to wait two days. When we returned to our room we had a further shock; when the room above us flushed their toilet or showered it was as if they were in the room with us, the noise was so loud and clear, as their bathroom pipes ran through our room and a large grating in our ceiling exposed the bottom of their bath! Repeated requests to be moved were again fobbed off and I can safely say I did not sleep more than a few hours each night from the combined noise disturbances.

There were tea and coffee facilties, but that is where we hit our next snag on the first night; only one teabag. I popped down to reception to ask for another, and some milk, and I was told they would be brought up, but they never arrived. This happened for the first three nights of our stay - and the stock of teas and coffees was never replenished despite more than a few requests. At breakfast the next day (which was otherwise excellent with a wide selection of hot and cold items, fruits and juices) I asked for milk but was told there was none. On the second day there was jug on milk amongst the fruit juices, but I was stopped from using it for my tea, being told that it was 'just for cereals', and the waitress took the jug out of my hands and walked away with it! So no tea for us English travellers, and we do like our tea!

On the fourth afternoon we did eventually get a glass of milk brought to the room, but that caused us more trouble; when we returned the room after our evening meal that day we had a phone call asking us if the milk was OK. My travelling companion, slightly confused, answered that everything was fine, and then the caller proceeded to tell us we were very beautiful and asked whether we would like some company. He persisted with more offers to come to our room, until I told him to 'go away' in no uncertain terms. We did not sleep very well again with the knowledge that this persistent character had access to our room, and so the next morning we asked to speak to the manager but were fobbed off; at this point I became quite irate and stormed out to find a cafe in which to calm down. I felt it was completely inappropriate for their staff to behave this way, and have since told them in an email that has received no repsonse. It was by no means all the staff though, the majority were friendly, but the standard of service we received was really quite poor.

Although the Milton is described as 4* but (just my opinion!) I would not agree, as the rooms were small, with no room service or leisure or restaurant facilties (breakfast took place in the smartly-decorated basement). It had a great brekfast, it was clean, and was in an excellent location with great links, and if we had not experienced such poor service then I'd recommend this hotel to anyone. Milk for tea really should not present an insurmountable challenge to a 4* hotel! There will always be problems encountered when travelling, but it is the way they are dealt with that marks out a great hotel, and this wasn't one. I would recommend a visit to Rome, as it is a magical city with so much to experience, but I would not recommend the Milton as you will need a good night's sleep to have the energy to see all the city has to offer - that said, get yourself a quiet room there and your stay could be quite pleasant!
