Theatre with a dramatic background!

Advantages: spectacular backdrop of the sea, very cheap
Disadvantages: performances only of an evening

...that we visited was the Minack Theatre in Porthcurno. Unlike many of the other attractions it had a real Cornish feel to it and was really worth seeing.

For those of you who have never heard of the Minack Theatre (and that's probably most of you) it's a really spectacular place with a fantastic history to it. The theatre is literally carved in to the rocks of the cliffs at Porthcurno, creating one of the most incredible arenas for ...
...it is quite astounding.

In 1932 Miss Rowena Cade and her dramatic group performed Shakespeare's Tempest in Porthcurno with the sea as their backdrop in Miss Cades back garden. Liking the setting Cade and her gardener made a terrace and rough seating - the start of the theatre that we see today. Year upon year the theatre was changed slightly and modernised, theatre companies travelled from miles around to perform their plays on this ... more

A THEATRE WITH A VIEW

Advantages: Open air Theatre does not come any better.
Disadvantages: Those hard seats, do not forget the cushions.

...VERY BEST. The Minack Theatre is located next to Porthcurno Bay which is just off the B3315 between Lands End and Penzance. For persons like me who do not drive, there are Scheduled Bus Services from Penzance. the 300 and the 1A which both stop in Porthcurno Valley, the theatre is a further 400 meter walk up a steep hill. For full details of the Events at the Minack and further pictures visit its own web site WWW.MINACK.COM The Theatre was built, ...
...We have visited the Minack for several Plays/Musicals and have never been disappointed. If staying in St Ives, check OATES TRAVEL on the High Street who will have Bus/Play tickets available. If attending a Matinee Performance do not forget the Sun Block you are very exposed. Evening performances may well need something warm as the Sun goes down. The lower seats do have backs, the higher ones are bench like, but they do hire Cusions, highly recommended, ...

Breathtaking beyond compare

Advantages: A experince to remember
Disadvantages: Its location makes public transport limited

I was told about this theatre a year ago and thought yeah yeah yeah. This year I was dragged 320 miles from Kent to Cornwall to see a play, WOW what a place. Anybody who likes the theatre should go, Everyone else too, As it opens during the day for visitors. It is planted out with many exotic looking plants and bushes to add to the experience. It is actually carved into the cliff top itself with a backdrop of the wonderful Cornish coastline, With ...
...stage. The toilet facility is good as is the coffee shop, while in here look out the windows to see a view of a sandy beached cove, otherwise hidden from the theatre itself. They do not sell alcohol, ( probably a good idea as there are slopes and steps to negotiate and being surefooted is recommended ) they do allow you to take your own in. The seating is grassed and stone terraces, so hiring seat pads and backs at reasonable rates is a good idea. ...

Gwithian Farm Campsite

Advantages: Friendly, welcoming owners. Superb beach near campsite with lovely views
Disadvantages: Simple campsites facilities only. Just Good Showers,Toilets and Shop

' of Cornwall and attractions such as the Tate Gallery and Barbara Hepworth's Sculpture Garden in St Ives, Land's End, the Minack Theatre, Penzance and St Michael's Mount, the gardens at Glendurgan and Trebah and, finally, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall at Falmouth. Just a few of our suggestions, but of course you may prefer places like the Lizard Peninsula, with the Goonhilly sateliite dishes, just south of Helston. Altogether a lovely base for a super camping holiday in Cornwall ! ...

Kernow Bys Vyken!

Advantages: One of the most breathtakingly beautiful places in the UK
Disadvantages: Very weak economically, relieves too heavily on summer tourism

pubs which serve good, local food and cold, Cornish ale! If that doesn't whet your appetite you could go to Padstow, a tiny fishing village home to Rick Stein, who lives and owns a famous Michellin star seafood resturant there. Or perhaps you may prefer the culinary skills of Jamie Oliver and his 15 resturant, which opened in Newquay (beach and surfers heaven) recently? I prefer good old local fair, which uses local ingredients, and recommend that to you above all. There is so much to write about this amazing place, from its history (Cornwall had it's own celtic language), the mines, the castles, the Minack Theatre (an outdoor theatre calved into the cliffside in Porthcurnow), the coast, the marshes, the animal life...I could write for hours. Just go...it will take your breath away, but don't just go to the tourist hot-spots, try asking ...
