OPEN AIR THEATRE AT ITS VERY BEST.
The Minack Theatre is located next to Porthcurno Bay which is just off the B3315 between Lands End and Penzance.
For persons like me who do not drive, there are Scheduled Bus Services from Penzance. the 300 and the 1A which both stop in Porthcurno Valley, the theatre is a further 400 meter walk up a steep hill.
For full details of the Events at the Minack and further pictures visit its own web site WWW.MINACK.COM
The Theatre was built, honed out of the rocks by a young woman ROWENA CADE with the only help being from the families gardener.
It is now a 750 seat theatre, staging a wide range of events. Shakespear , what better setting for the Tempest than a cliff side setting.
Opera, Drama, Musicals they are all there.
We have visited the Minack for several Plays/Musicals and have never been disappointed.
If staying in St Ives, check OATES TRAVEL on the High Street who will have Bus/Play tickets available.
If attending a Matinee Performance do not forget the Sun Block you are very exposed.
Evening performances may well need something warm as the Sun goes down.
The lower seats do have backs, the higher ones are bench like, but they do hire Cusions, highly recommended, and I think they now even have back rests.
The Theatre is open most days for Visitors who just want to view the Wonderful complex. There is a small exhibition giving the Full Story of a Little Girl who came to Cornwall, fell in love with doing plays in the garden and went on to build a Theatre.
We have always found the standard of the performers very high, the sound quality is excellent.
Imagine you arrive about 6.30 for the 8 o'clock performance. You have packed wine and a picnic, which you can then enjoy either at the top or in your allocated seats.
You sit and gaze over the Sea, the Backdrop to the stage. Evening is falling the light changes with every second. You watch the Cormerants flying low over the sea on their way to roost, you realise they seem to follow the exact route of the previous one.
Perhaps the Full Moon rises out of the Sea or over the cliffs.
The play is Romeo and Juliet, how more Romantic can the most of Romantic plays be.
We were lucky this is exactly how it was when we saw Romeo & Juliet at the Minack.
So if in the area do search it out, try to get to a performance, they book up very quickly.
Another Bonus is that in Portcurno Valley is the Atlantic Cable Display, the cable actually comes out of the Sea in Porthcurno Bay. This attraction is an also must . to see how we managed to text before mobiletelephones.
