Minas Gerais is a State with many historical cities which flourished during the period when there was plenty of gold to be digged out. Brazil does not have many mountains, and most of them are in Minas Gerais. Probably the most famous town is Ouro Preto, although my favourite was Diamantina, where I found much less tourists. The capital of Minas, Belo Horizonte is a modern city which makes a good starting point to explore the State. Minas Gerais is also a State with many industries, which is doing well in the context of Brazilian Economy
