The Minster Hotel in York is situated on Bootham and is literally no more than a 5 minute walk down a staright road from the city centre. It is a friendly, welcoming place to stay. My boyfriend and I were looking to stay in another hotel in York, but as this particular weekend was a race weekend, many hotels were fully booked and in high demand. My sister in law recommended this one to me, and we were able to stay here for 3 nights earlier this year in July. We were very pleased with our stay.

Although check in wasn\'t normally until 3pm, we were allocated our room atleast an hour and a half earlier than would of been allowed, which was great as we had arrived in York alot sooner than we expected. On arrival we were asked for our name, whether we wanted to order a morning paper, and for our car registration. The hotel has its own car park situated behind the building, which is private, and obviously for guests only. This is a great plus side, as many of the hotels and guest houses in York don\'t have their own private parking facilites. This way we had piece of mind that the car was safe and secure, and we also noticed that there was CCTV monitoring the car park.

We were directed to our room, a standard double. On booking, we had requested one of the larger double rooms, or even a four poster room, but all were already allocated to other guests. However our room was well equipped and homely. It was quite small, and fairly compact - not as spacious as we had expected, but as it was just somewhere to rest our heads at night, we weren\'t particularly bothered. The room was furnished with a standard sized double bed, 2 bedside cabinets, a wardrobe, an armchair and a large dressing table with stool. As you can imagine, quite a lot of furniture for a small room. Extras included a television with channels BBC1 and 2, ITV, and channel 4, a hairdryer, trouser press, telephone and tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom was nice, and again well equipped. There was a bath with shower, a toilet and sink, with a large mirror above. We also had a generous supply of towels, toiletries and toilet roll. The lock on the bathroom door however did not work. The main door to the room had a fantastically designed lock, which once shut, automatically locked from the outside, meaning no one could venture in, and you didnt have to lock the door from the inside by yourself.

Our first night went okay. Earlier in the evening we went to sample the hotel bar, which was a lovely setting in the basement, with large leather armchairs and friendly staff. That night in bed we were woken up several times by drunken people staggering down Bootham, shouting and screaming louder than I thought was humanly possible, but it was a Saturday night so we had to just grin and bare it. Also, as our room was situated at the front of the hotel, we could hear loud traffic, and an annoying beeping coming from the crossing every few seconds. We had to keep our window open as being the hottest weekend in July, we couldnt stand the heat in the room otherwise. However we finally drifted off and the rest of the night (well, the few hours left of it) was peaceful.

The folowing morning we woke up, showered, and went down to the dining area for breakfast. We were shown to our seats by another polite and friendly member of staff, who took our orders for hot drinks and toast. The dining area was large and spacious with numerous tables all set out immaculately. here was a small table in the middle wre you could help yourself to cold juices or water, and cereal and milk, or fruit. Also there was a menu for hot food which included two versions of the full english breakfast we know and love, including everything from beans to black pudding. Also there were lighter options such as bacon sandwiches, and beans on toast. The breakfast was basically like an all-you-can-eat meal, as it was a set price included in the price for your room.

Our second and third nights were alot more peaceful and we slept like logs, and the following two breakfasts were just as successful.

Check out was at 11 am, but we left early so that we could spend our last morning there in the City Centre. However, the lady working on reception allowed us to leave our car parked in the hotel car park for as long as we wanted.

Our stay cost £345, plus a little extra for the papers we ordered, which is quite expensive for a 3 night stay. It would of only cost us around £280, but many hotels put the prices up that weekend, due to the high demand caused by race weekend. I wasn\'t keen on paying that much, but we did have a lovely weekend and the weather was excellent. Here is the Hotel Tarriff:

Rates for 2007
Sunday to
Thursday Friday &
Saturday
Room Type Prices From Prices From
Single occupancy double £69.00 £89.00
Standard double £89.00 £99.00
Large double/twin (dbl & sgl) £99.00 £119.00
Four poster room £119.00 £145.00
Deluxe four poster with jacuzzi £149.00 £165.00

As you can see there is quite a wide price range, but it all depends on what kind of room you\'re after. Bank holiday, York race meetings, and special events are more expensive however.

The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful, and there was always someone at the reception desk to deal with all your queries and needs.

I think the hotel is very family friendly, and hasplenty of facilities to suit all your needs. There is a welcoming homely atmosphere and I would recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a nice place to stay in York. We had a lovely stay and would love to go back and visit in the future.

Very good informative review. Its a pity that in Rip-off Britain they could not throw in free Newspapers when you see what you are paying. You could have stayed in Venice for half the price and free newspapers. Regards Steve
