Moby Dick -

Peakssample), which turned American kids on to raving. Sadly, they could relate more to this wiry, bald New Yorker with a speed metal background, than to the true techno originators from Chicago and Detroit. Collecting Moby's early American EPs "Next Is The E", "Drop A Beat" and "Go" itself, Moby's debut long-player takes you back to an era of innocence. A time of facemasks and Vicks; glo sticks and white gloves; old-fashioned jump up-and-down rave tunes. Although it's occasionally serene and down tempo, the essence of this album is hands-in-the-air, piano breakdowns, orgasmic 'oh yeeaaaah!' loops, stomping beats. Most disappointingly, the mix of "Thousand" is ambient, not the mental thousand-beat version, which claims to be the fastest record ever. Ultimately, this album is worth more in nostalgia value than in musical longevity. --Sarah Champion

Dick tells the tale of one man's fatal obsession and his willingness to sacrifice his life and that of his crew to achieve his goal. The story follows the fortunes of Captain Ahab and the culturally and spiritually diverse crew of the Pequod, a 19th century whaling ship. The Pequod is on its last voyage out of New Bedford, Mass, in pursuit of Moby Dick, the great white whale which has been Ahab's obsessional quarry and bitter adversary for many years. Narrated by sole survivor Ishmael, the tale forms a complex fictional fusion, combining a wealth of literary symbolism, hidden meaning and philosophical debate with adventure narrative and a detailed historical account of the 19th century whaling trade. --Emily Lowson
...I have seen the most fantastic play performed on a ship! Walk the Plank's production of Herman Melville's classic "MobyDick" is one of the most excellent I have ever seen.
The theatre company are based in Britain's only touring theatre ship called the Fitzcarraldo. The ship was previously a cargo and passenger ferry until it was bought by the British merchant fleet and converted into the first floating theatre.
The performance I attended was during the Whitstable Oyster Festival and the parts were taken by just four actors who had to stay on the stage pretty much the whole time. Make up and the stage was excellent and the play was very true to the story of MobyDick. A must see for theatre goers.
It is due in various other places this year including Cardiff, Gloucester, Belfast and Carrickfergus. The Gloucester...

Advantages: Good value, good food Disadvantages: Fills up quickly
...Dick Tracy's restaurant in the centre of Helsinki is well worth a visit. It doesn't look much from the outside but it definitely improves once your in. It serves a large menu of (surprisingly) American style food, and the menus are in English as well as Finnish. You can get a main course for under £10 and the portions are
more than generous! Alcohol is reasonable expensive (about £2.50 for a beer) but not by local standards and they do serve (bottled) bitter which is pretty unusual. We had an excellent waitress who spoke English and voluntarily divided our bill up by person and knew exactly what we'd each had to eat and drink. We were there on a Friday and it was full, so book or go early (remember they stop work about 4.30 in Finland)....

I love reading, doing English at Cambridge makes this somewhat obvious, but I still feel it needs to be said. My love of reading means that I enjoy books that are hard work and rewarding as much as I enjoy cheap thrilly trash. Moby Dick is not cheap... more
Calling your band Pickled Dick is probably to some people, the equivalent of hanging a blanket-covered child over a balcony; attention grabbing but for all the wrong reasons. However, band name aside (I think it's legendary), Pickled Dick are one of the... more
I have always been a fan of Moby's work most obvious tracks from the 90's in Go, and most recently the ITV Formula 1 signature track 'Lift Me Up', and also the James Bond Theme of 'Tomorrow Never Dies'. It is something about the style and the rhythm of... more
