Hi there everybody!! I recently travelled to Kenya and i just thought i'd share some of my experiences with you!
I travelled to Mombassa Kenya in July of this year and i have to say i think it was the best holiday i have been on! I have totally fallen in love with Africa and the African people! I am even thinking about saving up so i can travel there sometime in the future with my friends!
I stayed in a hotel called The Voyager Beach Resort, the hotel itself is situated on the beach and is approx. 10 mins from Mombassa Town. The views are breathtaking across the ocean and if you have a sea view room then this is what you are to wake up every morning for the next 2 weeks!! The food was fantastic and all the staff were very obliging! I am still in contact with many of them even now! As a 17 yr old i get very bored very easily, but the hotel offered so many different activities, i always found myself being roped into some kind of sport! :o) However the only problem with being directly on the beach was that it wasn'y always as easy to get directly to the sea lol! There are always local people trying to sell you their goods, and althoough they are amazingly friendly they are also amazingly persuasive and usually get their own way especially if you take an interest in their goods.
If you are looking to bring home lots of souveniers from your holiday i do suggest that you take a box of biro pens with you! lol no im not kidding! many of the sellers will first ask you if you have any pens and would like to swap something (like a sounvenier) for them. My dad got rid of many socks and items of clothing doing this....which mum was not best pleased about! lol.
The weather is fantastic and although i went during one of the coldest months of the year, it was still blistering hot (36C) and i therefore recommend that you start off by using a high factor sun cream and gradually work your way down as you progress through your holiday. Even i had to do this and i have olive skin and do not burn easily.
Another thing i would recommend that you take with you is mossy repelent. I was one of the few annoying people that managed not to get bitten once while i was on holiday, but unfortunately many of my friends were bitten quite badly several times! The best time to wear mossy spray is in the evening becuase this is the peak time that they are on the prowl for fresh blood.....nice.
Kenya offers many attractive activities, here are some of the trips that i participated in:
1) Safari - We only went on a one day safari, and to be honest this was more than enough for me!We saw practically all the animals but there were large gaps of time where we saw nothing at all! By the end of the day i was shattered! However many of my friends that also went on safari's (many of them for longer periods of time) did thoroughly enjoy them.
2) The dolphin dahl - This was an amazing trip that took approx 2 hours to get to the destination from Mombassa and allowed yout to spend the day on a boat in the search for dolphins! In fact it only took a about 45 mins for us to find a whole school of dolphins. After this we had lunch on the boat with everybody and then we all went snorkelling over the coral reef!! Now i dont particularly like fish, but this experience was just breathtaking, not like the ugly fish you get in your local supermarket but gorgeous electric coloured fish swimming only a few inches below you. Overall this is one trip you dont want to miss.
3) The Mombassa town trip - not one for the faint hearted! lol the first few places you visit are the old port, fort jesus, a muslim temple, a woodcarving centre (where you get to see all the local people hand crafting sculptures...and then have an oppotunity to buy some of their work!) then you take a visit to the market place! Lets just say it was interesting lol! You are told to stay within your group and consult the guide before buying anything! Also people tend to follow you and try to sell you their goods. However it gives a unique insight into the African culture and i would still recommended it.
One last thing i would tell you about is that if you suffer from travel sickness.....take LOTS of sickness pills with you as the roads aren't exactly tarmaced!
Well thank you for your time! I hope this information is useful to you in some way :o)
Advantages: Great place to relax and unwind. Hot. Disadvantages: VERY HOT!

***MOMBASA***
Mombassa is a port town – newly designated as a city (the President’s New Year present) – on the Indian Ocean coast. It is a bustling, vibrant place, sadly lacking in anything resembling the levels of cleanliness we are familiar with in our major cities. The Town centre is no safe place to be after dark for tourists, but ... ...remember the golden rules – carry no valuables in obvious places, not even jewellery and keep money well hidden away. Take a taxi if you are not sure – it is better to be safe than to be sorry. But there is much to see in the centre of Mombassa – most notably Fort Jesus: a stop off for slaves in the 18th century. And now onto the op… **TRAVELLING TO MOMBASSA** There are a number of ways of getting to Mombassa – as we were staying in Nairobi beforehand ...

Advantages: Beautiful landscapes and fantastic excursions Disadvantages: Beach boys and price difference
I went to the Papillon Lagoon Reef Hotel on Daini Beach, Mobasa, Kenya in May 2001. The deal we got was brilliant - £480 each for two weeks all inclusive. Jostling about on the plane journey, which was a fair bit longer than we thought it would be - about 10 hours travelling - I didn't really know what to expect - considering I'd only seen Africa in documentaries about lions and in the Lion King by Disney.
The previous opinions have showed you how ... ...was no exception, but I feel that this opinion should inform people of the various problems we encountered, as you don't want to hear the same stuff over again.
I will start, however, with a description so that you can weigh the pros and cons for yourselves. Mobasa itself is not for the feint hearted - travellers should be aware of the poverty that the residents live in. There was a great flood through the area which practically destroyed the roads ...

Advantages: Great weather all year round. Disadvantages: Beware of crime.
My worst memory of Mombassa was the day we hired a boat to take us to the reef. A respectable looking guy approached us on the beach and offered to take us on a tour of the reef. I was keen on doing some snorkelling so we arranged to go that afternoon. We had mistakenly thought he was the official hotel boat operator but when we eventually found him it was at a different booking office. No matter, he seemed a decent chap and the boat looked OK. The ... ...a good snorkelling site first, then on to the reef. On arrival at our first destination he dropped anchor, sorry, I mean he threw over a piece of rope, just long enough to reach the bottom, with a rock tied to it. The snorkelling was great so we stayed there longer than the other boats to get a less crowded look. When we arrived at the reef, most of the other boats were departing for shore. The boatman pulled alongside one of the few remaining boats ...

Advantages: beaches, people, hotels Disadvantages: beach boys
The beaches around Mombasa are wonderful but it depends where you go!
By far the most spectacular are the beaches south of Mombasa but once you get on the main strip you will be driven mad by beach boys unless you choose your hotel carefully. One of the cheapest and the best is Traveller's Tiwi - here they only allow a few to use the beach - they don't pester guests because the hotel allows them to set up a shop after dinner once a week and this ... ...agents at Diani.
North of Mombasa life is more hectic and the beach boys are so persistent that the hotels do not put sun loungers on the beach! You have to run into the sea to avoid them! They are very cheerful and funny but a pest !
If you go further north to Sun and Sand etc the sea goes out miles and you can never swim in it.
Use the beach boys to take you out snorkelling as they know where to go. bargain hard. Beware of Kenya Airways as they ...

Advantages: Plenty to do and very cheap. Disadvantages: A very dirty city.
Mombasa is a rather dirty city on the coast of Kenya. As soon as you get out into the surrounding areas though it changes dramatically. There are the most fantastic sandy beaches with clear blue warm waters. The diving is second to none with something for every one, from small wrecks, to coral walls. The marine life is truly abundant, with sharks, moray eels and turtles in hugh quantitys. On the north coast outside mombasa there is a highly recomendable ... ...lot of history in the Mombasa area, and also world famous safari's. The safari to tsavo east and west is the best that I went on. If you like good food, then you must also eat at the Tamarind resturaunt as it is world class, especially the Lobster. If you like the sea, then try the Tamarind Dow. Mombasa is perfect for singles, couples or familys, although as a word of warning, if you are traveling alone there is an extremely high incidence of AIDs ...

Advantages: Great People, Great Nightlife, Great Experience! Disadvantages: Too many things to see, short time..!!
Kenya has a lot to offer. Nairobi is the Capital city and Mombasa being the second largest town.
There are very things one can experience in both cities. In Nairobi, there are a lot of entertainment spots. For example, The Carnivore bar and restaurant, (where you can taste game meat plus nightlife)or the Casablanca.. (Really nice)?or you can head off to Westland?s area where there are many clubs and it?s only five minute drive to the city centre.
There are many good hotels too e.g. the holiday inn, Hilton, Panafric, Grand Regency, The intercontinental. You can get pocket friendly hotels; all you have to do is shop around. Alternatively, if you intend to stay longer you can rent a furnished apartment in areas such as Hurlingham or Westland?s. You?ll pay far much less than staying in a hotel.
There is the ?Masaai market? every ...

Advantages: Beautiful beaches, relaxed lifestyle, friendly people Disadvantages: Delayed flights
My husband took me Zanzibar for our honeymoon. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had.
Our flight was due to leave Mombasa, Kenya at 6.30pm for Zanzibar and we were delayed until 9pm! On reaching Zanzibar, we arrived to a warm welcome from the airport staff who were very helpful in helping us get our luggage. I was suprised to see that they have the state of the art technology at such a small airport where they scanned our passports and were officially allowed into Zanzibar.
The first couple of nights we spent at Emerson and Green in the heart of Stonetown (which is Zanzibars capital city) one of the most amazing hotels I have been in. It was decorated in an ancient traditional style with each room having its own theme. The room we were in was the size of a 3 room apartment. All in an open plan sort of theme ...
Advantages: Beautiful country and people Disadvantages: Money is not going to the right cause! False information
Went to MombasaKenya last year on a teaching project, beautiful country and amazing culture and people, but not sure where all my money went, certainly not on the project itself, on accomodation or on food.
O arrival I was left to sit at Moi international for over an hour and had to call to find out about my pick-up which I had paid an extra £17 for in the UK. I now realise I could have got myself into a taxi hassle free and got to my hotel.
The hotel you are put in for the first weekend is fine - but not the most comfortable. But I overlooked this given the fact I was going to Kenya to volunteer and not for luxury accomodation. However as time went by and on arrival at the volunteer house I began to think more about how much money I had actually paid to do this, and if it had been going to the project I could've dealt ...
